HISTORY

You have entered the realm of POTS Flag Football. Beware, the excitement may be too much for some to handle. For those of you interested in what POTS stands for, we are the Pride of the Southland Marching Band athletic organization here at the University of Tennessee. Not only do we compete in the UT Intramural Flag Football League, but we also play in the Knoxville Flag Football League.

This athletic team has been in existence for many, many years, but only in the past three years have we become extremely competitive with the other university teams. Just this past season, POTS made it to the UT Flag Football Intramural playoffs for the first time in history. Needless to say, we were truly excited and proud of our accomplishment. It has taken a few years, but we believe that our hard work and dedication has paid big dividends. Other sports we compete in on campus are soccer, tennis, basketball, volleyball, softball, and the Punt, Pass, and Kick competition.

LAST WEEK'S GAME

Defense, Defense, Defense. That was the word of the day when POTS met Showtime in a Week 5 battle. POTS only allowed its opposition to move the ball 4 total yards in its 4 first half possessions. On the other side of the ball, POTS would score on all 6 of its possessions to extend its consecutive TD streak to 26.

Showtime started the game on offense and picked up a first down on 4th down. However on the next play, an errant snap would push them almost back to where they started their drive. POTS would hold on 3rd and two lines and forced a punt. The "Fun-n-Gun" would waste no time in moving the ball down the field as Lyon would take a Mawyer pitch and race down the sidelines to the 6 yard line. On third down, Lyon would find Horst in the right corner of the endzone for the opening score. Showtime would again find it difficult to move the ball when Moore would break in front of an opposing player for the interception. Moore would again make an outstanding play when he extended himself to bring in a sideline pass and somehow kept his feet in bounds. Horst would again ring 6 more up on the board with an 11 yard TD reception. Jeremy Cassell would step up on defense when he would fight his way through the blocking and sack the QB on a big 3rd down play. Another punt by Showtime, and POTS was back in business. Lyon would hook up with Moore on consecutive passes to move the ball to the 1 yard line. On the next play, Moore's roomate, Todd Mawyer would take it the rest of the way for a 21-0 lead. Showtime started its next possession with some trickery, but POTS was not fooled. Paul Forsyth played it perfectly and made a key interception. If you blinked, you would have missed the next TD. After a diving catch by the Third Amigo, John Miller, Mawyer would make a 6 yard reception for the final points of the half.

Showtime attempted to make a defensive adjustment in the 2nd half by rushing with two, but POTS still found ways to move the ball with relative ease. Aided by a 10 yard illegal contact penalty on the defense, POTS would move the final 21 yards on a Lyon-to-Horst connection. Horst would only have 3 catches on the day, but he would make every one of them count as they all would go for TDs. Showtime wouldn't quit though. They would move the ball down the field and would score on a 1 yard pass and make the two point conversion. POTS wouldn't let the loss of a shutout affect them though as they would drive 45 yards to paydirt. John Miller would again make a spectacular diving catch for a gain of 18 yards. Two plays later, Moore would catch a 7 yard pass for the 42nd and final points of the game.

POTS opens up its championship quest with a first round playoff date with K7. They are a perrenial playoff team and will be an extremely tough test for POTS. In order to be the best, POTS will have to beat the best, and K7 is just that. This is what we have been waiting for for years and I'm sure we are going to put up a tremendous fight. The game is Wednesday, Nov. 15 at 8pm.

POTS IN MOTION

One of our favorite plays to run during the course of a game is Spider Left. This play uses a pick in order for another receiver to get open. Also, the play is deceiving since it looks like the pass is intended for someone other than who ends up with the reception.

What happens is that the slot receiver on the left runs a 5 yard hook route. The left flanker must delay 2 seconds before running a slant route directly in front of the slot receiver. The QB must fire the ball directly at the man running the hook route. Just before the ball gets to the slot receiver, the left flanker comes out of nowhere and takes the pass and goes up the middle. Hopefully, the defense will react to the pass going towards the slot receiver and be offbalance once the left flanker makes the catch.
