Listed below is a e-mail from Mr. Neil Anderson, the Chemical Review Manager, for the herbicide Ametryn. Ametryn is a selective herbicide used to control most annual weeds in banana (directed basal spray), pineapple, and sugarcane (broadcast or interline/interspace spray), Post directed spray in corn.

EPA is planning on finishing the risk assessment for this chemical in August and there will be changes to the label (see memo below). The application rate (both single rate & annual rate) will be changed for corn (field and pop), pineapple (HI), sugarcane (FL, LA, TX), and sugarcane (HI). Aerial application of ametryn to sugarcane in Hawaii will be not be allowed. The technical registrant Syngenta, has proposed deleting the registration on sweet corn and the use in Puerto Rico on sugarcane and pineapples.

Should you have any concerns about these proposed label changes, please contact Mr. Neil Anderson at (703) 308-8187, e-mail: anderson.neil@epa.gov .. Also, please forward this message to any person who would be interested in these label changes and may want more information from EPA. Especially, people with an interest in sugarcane, pineapple, and corn (field & pop). Thank you for your time.

Greetings Phil,

I just wanted to drop you a note letting you know that we are
progressing with drafting the RED for ametryn herbicide and that we
anticipate the RED being complete in August. During the comment period
the registrant, Syngenta, proposed new maximum rates and other use
pattern modifications that we wanted to make sure you were aware of.
The table below presents the new maximum rates Syngenta proposed and
note that they are not allowing aerial application to sugarcane in HI.
|------------------------+----------------+-------------+------------------+----
| | | | |
|
|------------------------+----------------+-------------+------------------+----
| Crop | Max Single Rate| Applications| Maximum Seasonal |
|
| | (Lbs/ai/A) | per Yr | Rate (Lbs /A/Yr) | Ground/Aerial |
|------------------------+----------------+-------------+------------------+----
| Corn (Field and Pop) | 1.6 | 1 | 1.6 | Ground |
|------------------------+----------------+-------------+------------------+----
| Pineapple (HI) | 1.6 | 2 | 3.2 | Ground |
|------------------------+----------------+-------------+------------------+----
| Sugarcane (FL, LA, TX) | 1.2 | 2 | 2.4 | Ground/Aerial |
|------------------------+----------------+-------------+------------------+----
| Sugarcane (HI) | 2.4 | 3 | 7.2 | Ground |

Syngenta also indicated they no longer are supporting a registration on
sweet corn and use in Puerto Rico on sugarcane and pineapple.

We aren't planning any other mitigation actions at this time, but wanted
to make sure you were aware of the situation. I am out of the office
next week and Mark Howard is out until 8/1, so if you have any questions
we can catch up when I return to the office the week of 7/25 or you can
contact Mike Goodis if it can't wait.

Hope you are having a good summer and I will talk with you soon.
