The NIAS and Homeland Security
In the aftermath of September 11, the National Institute for Agricultural Security (NIAS) was formed to protect the nation's agricultural systems, in cooperation with universities and colleges of agriculture. The goal of the NIAS is to facilitate cooperation between state-based agricultural research projects and federal programs, using state experts to address national biosecurity issues.
The Department of Homeland Security also gives 100 scholarships every year for undergraduate/ graduate fellowships, as well as internships every 8-10 weeks. This scholarship is available to all students interested in pursuing scientific and technological innovations in conjunction with the Department of Homeland Security. DHS Secretary Tom Ridge says the scholarship program "will produce talented and experienced scientists and engineers that will play vital roles in securing America against terrorism."
