About Us

The University of Tennessee Equestrian Team began in the mid 1970s as a way for collegiate riders to continue to excel in the sport while at school. As an active Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) team, we consist of 50 riders in both western and hunt seat equitation, requiring all riders to have at least a 2.0 and be full-time students. The team competes in IHSA Zone 5, region 1, along with Maryville College, The University of the South, Vanderbilt University, Murray State University, Tennessee Tech University, Middle Tennessee State University, Mississippi State University, University of Tennessee at Martin, Mississippi College, and Western Kentucky University.
The team strives to provide an atmosphere where riders are not limited by their ability or financial status. Competition spots range from the beginning walk-trot rider, to the open jumper rider, and members help each other in becoming better horsemen and better athletes. The team finished the 2008-2009 season by sending 6 riders to regionals, and 4 of these subsequently qualified for zones. We hope to continue to excel throughout the next year, as we begin preparing for the show season, with Karen Kerch as the head coach of both teams.
The team is student run, with elected officers overseeing financial aspects as well as keeping the team organized and operating in a smooth and professional manner.
