The Writing Center

Students in writng labTHE WRITING CENTER serves student writers in the UTK community by offering free, individualized help throughout the process of developing written assignments in all disciplines. Each year, over 18,000 visits are made to the Writing Center.

Trained tutors (graduate students and instructors in the English Department) talk with students on a one-to-one basis and offer constructive feedback intended to help students become comfortable with writing and improve their writing practices.

We do not proofread or edit students’ work. However, anything from brainstorming for ideas, to organizing the structure of a written assignment, to learning how to polish final drafts may be covered, with an emphasis on teaching all writers how to improve.

We work with writers on a walk-in, first-come, first-served basis. However, we do make appointments for students whose first language is not English who need help with coursework-related writing assignments, and for students enrolled in English 121.

The up-to-date, welcoming facility offers quiet space for writing drafts, plenty of space for consultations with tutors, a variety of writing and reference manuals, and computers for word-processing and internet access.

We operate a Grammar Hotline (974-2611) for brief queries about writing.
