Off-Campus Study

The English Department's varied program of study can be enhanced by its three off-campus study courses, offered by members of the faculty.

These courses have program fees that cover tickets and accommodations (these fees do not cover travel, food, and course registration). Specific information on each year's courses can be secured on the department web site or by contacting the faculty member in charge of each course. Interested students should be advised that English 491 and 492 fill quickly.

Study in England (University Honors 337/English 492)

A three-week course offered during Mini-Term (May 7-28) for three credit hours.

Two days of each week will be spent traveling to sites of great significance, notably the cities of Oxford, Canterbury, Ely, Winchester and London. Like centuries of students before us, we will punt to the picturesque village of Trumpington on the River Cam.  There will be ample opportunity for individual excursions and long weekend trips out of Cambridge.

You may sign up for this seminar either under University Honors 337 or English 492. We expect there will be considerable interest in this University Honors Seminar abroad, so we encourage early registration.

Drama in Stratford and London (English 491/591)

A three-week drama course offered during Summer Session (second term) for three or four credit hours.

The first week of the course is spent in Stratford-upon-Avon. During this week, students see five plays produced by the Royal Shakespeare Company. In addition, students attend lectures given by British and American Shakespeare scholars; meet with actors and other members of the RSC; have back-stage tours of the RSC theaters; and visit sites of literary and historical significance.

The second and third weeks are spent in London, theater capital of Britain. Students see seven plays at the Royal National Theater, the Old Globe Theatre, and London's West End and Fringe theaters.

Written work for the course usually consists of a 36-40 page journal analyzing the plays and their productions.

Applications for admission into the Drama in Stratford and London program are accepted starting in Fall semester.

Drama in New York (English 492/592)

An eight-day drama course offered during Spring semester for three credit hours.

The New York component of the course, which takes place during late December or early January, involves seeing seven of the best plays produced on and off Broadway. Students stay at the Vanderbilt YMCA, an upscale dormitory-style facility in east Midtown. In New York the class meets as a group to discuss the plays, and students keep a journal analyzing the plays and their productions; during their free time they are encouraged to take advantage of New York's many cultural attractions.

In addition to the journal students generally write a research paper related to one or more of the plays. Applications into the Drama in New York course are accepted in early Fall semester.
