Course: University Honors 337/English 492
From the Cloister to the College: The Birth of the University

Description: With its rich collection of monasteries and cathedrals, universities and manuscripts, England is an extraordinary place to study the Middle Ages.  We are therefore pleased to invite students to join a special seminar conducted at Cambridge University by UT Professor Thomas Heffernan. This seminar, "From the Cloister to the College: The Origins of the University," will study the evolution of the university from its origins in medieval European religious institutions to its development in response to social and intellectual movements. It will appeal equally to students of literature, intellectual and cultural history, and art and architecture.

Field Trips: Dr. Heffernan, himself a graduate of Cambridge, will enrich your three-week experience with regular field trips.  Two days of each week will be spent traveling to sites of great significance, notably the cities of Oxford, Canterbury, Ely, Winchester and London. Like centuries of students before us, we will punt to the picturesque village of Trumpington on the River Cam.  There will be ample opportunity for individual excursions and long weekend trips out of Cambridge.

Lecturers from the University of Cambridge and Oxford will provide informative discussions to our seminar.

Credit Hours: You may sign up for this seminar either under University Honors 337 or English 492.  It carries three credit hours. We expect there will be considerable interest in this University Honors Seminar abroad, so we encourage early registration.

Cost:  approximately $4,000 and includes lodging in university housing, breakfast, field trips, guest lecturers and study abroad administrative fee.
Not included are:  airfare, UT tuition, personal expenditures, passport ($85), or International Student Identity Card ($25), lunch or dinner daily (kitchen facilities are available).

For an application, visit UTAbroad.org, Summer programs 2008, Cambridge. The application and a non-refundable deposit of $250 are due to the Programs Abroad Office two weeks after receipt of an acceptance email from the Center of International Education. Costs are accurate as of the printing of this flyer, September 21, 2007 and are subject to change.
