Application Procedure

To apply to the graduate program in English at the University of Tennessee, application materials must be received in two locations for your application to be processed: The Graduate School and the English Graduate Office. These are separate offices.

PLEASE PAY CAREFUL ATTENTION TO WHERE YOU SEND YOUR APPLICATION MATERIALS. Otherwise your application may not be completed in time to meet our departmental deadline and cannot be placed in the pool of candidates that will be evaluated for admission and teaching appointments.

You are responsible for making sure that your application is complete and all necessary materials are in our hands by the appropriate deadline: Ph.D. program December 15 or M.A. program January 15.

1. Documents to send to the English Department

Send the parts of your application listed below DIRECTLY to the following address: Director of Graduate Studies, 306 McClung Tower, University of Tennessee, Knoxville, Tennessee 37996-0430.

    1. Application for Graduate Appointment
      This application serves as an application for admission to the department and as an application for a teaching appointment if you so indicate in item no. 3. Be sure to complete the statement of purpose.

    2. Critical writing sample of up to 20 pages with works cited.
      Candidates for the M.A. with Concentration in Writing should also submit a sample of their creative work up to 10 pages.
      Candidates for the Ph.D. with Creative Dissertation should also email a PDF file to hinkle@utk.edu of no more than 25-20 pages of fiction or creative non-fiction or 15 poems, with name, address, email and phone number on the title page only.

    3. Three letters of recommendation. Please use the English Department Recommendation Form.

    4. Copies of Graduate Record Examination Scores
      General for the M.A., General and Subject for the Ph.D. The original copy of your scores must be sent to the office of Graduate Admissions and Records as indicated below.
      PLEASE NOTE: IN ORDER FOR YOUR GRE SUBJECT EXAM RESULTS TO REACH US BY THE DEADLINE, YOU MUST TAKE THE EXAM NO LATER THAN THE NOVEMBER TEST DATE.

    5. Copies of transcripts of all colleges and universities previously attended
      These may be unofficial photocopies of the official transcripts. The official forms must be sent to the office of Graduate Admissions and Records as indicated below.

2. Documents to send the Office of Graduate Admissions and Records

File an application with the Graduate School online or send the parts of your application listed below DIRECTLY to the Office of Graduate Admissions and Records, University of Tennessee, Knoxville, TN 37996-0220:

    1. Graduate Application for Admission Form

    2. A $35.00 application fee

    3. Official Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores

    4. Official Transcripts for all college and universities previously attended

Deadline for Applications

The Deadline for application for admission to the Ph.D. is December 15 and for the M.A. is January 15 each year. APPLICATIONS COMPLETED AFTER THESE DATES WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED FOR ADMISSION.
