Fall 2007

  • Thursday, September 6: Kevin Brockmeier is the author of the novels The Brief History of the Dead and The Truth About Celia and the story collections Things That Fall from the Sky and The View from the Seventh Layer (forthcoming in early 2008). He has published stories in  The New Yorker, McSweeney's, The Oxford American, The Best American Short Stories and O. Henry: Prize Stories. He was recently named one of Granta magazine's Best Young American Novelists. He will be reading from his fiction at 7:00 PM at the Laurel Theater. in conjunction with the Knoxville Writers' Guild.

  • Dr. Barbara Burke and James Lee BurkeMonday, September 24: Barbara Bogue will favor us with two separate presentations. At noon, she will give a talk on outreach projects resulting in book publication in 1210-11 McCLung Tower and that evening, at 7:00 PM in the Hodges Library Auditorium, she will
    discuss the life and work of mystery writer James Lee Burke, about whom she has published the book James Lee Burke and The soul of James Robicheaux: A Critical Study of the Crime Fiction Series. Ms. Bogue is a well-published poet, essayist, short story writer and literary critic. She teaches creative writing in the M.A. Program and to undergraduate majors at Ball State University.

  • Monday, October 1: Wendy Brenner is the author of the short story collections Phone Calls From the Dead and Large Animals in Everyday Life, winner of the Flannery O'Connor Prize. Her stories have appeared in Ploughshares, The Oxford American and Story as well as numerous anthologies. She teaches Creative Writing in the MFA Program at UNC-Wilmington and will be reading at 7:00 PM in the Hodges Library Auditorium.

  • Tuesday, October 16: Jonathan Coleman is a former editor for Simon and Schuster and a reporter for CBS news. His first book, At Mother's Request, was a bestseller, followed by Exit the Rainmaker and most recently, A Long Way To Go: Black and White In
    America, a examination of  race relations in the US. He will be reading and discussing his work at 7:00 PM in the Hodges Library Auditorium.

  • Monday, October 29: Michelle Boisseau's books of poetry include Trembling Air, Understory, and No Private Life. She is also the author of the highly regarded teaching text, Writing Poems, now in it's sixth edition, and a professor of English at the University of Missouri-Kansas City where she is Associate Editor of BkMK Press. She will be reading poetry at 7:00 PM in the Hodges Library Auditorium.
