School Psychology Program

Course Descriptions

There are two School Psychology Programs, an Ed.S. program and a Ph.D. program. Both programs are approved and/or accredited by the Tennessee State Department of Education, the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP), and NCATE for preparation of school psychologists. The Ph.D. program is also approved by the American Psychological Association (APA). Prospective students should consult the licensure requirements of the states in which they are interested in being licensed or certified to determine if this program meets their goals. In many instances, APA approval and NASP accreditation are accepted standards.

Both programs offer advanced graded, sequential, and hierarchical training in psychological and educational foundation, research, assessment, consultation, and intervention. The programs prepare professionals who work collaboratively with educators, administrators, parents, and children to promote learning and development in general education students and students with special needs. Students learn to use a Data-Based, Problem-Solving approach to aid with difficulties in learning and/or challenging behavior in field-based sites including urban, suburban, and rural schools. Research is an integral part of training. Students participate in on-going research each semester. Examples of recent student research include developing and validating procedures designed to assess and remedy reading and mathematics deficits, enhancing classroom learning via the application of cooperative learning, examining myths in the field of education and psychology, and developing and implementing procedures designed to reduce inappropriate classroom behavior.

Currently there are about 30 students in the programs, the majority of whom are Ph.D. students. Almost all are full-time students who work together in a collaborative environment to advance their skills, critical thinking, and the field.
