School Counseling — Master of Science
General Requirements
- You must be admitted formally to the graduate school before the completion of more than 15 hours of graduate course work, which may be applied toward your degree.
- You must have been formally admitted to the School Counselor program and have completed prerequisite courses in order to register for the counseling practicum (COUN 555), and must have taken classes for at least one semester after formal acceptance into the program. These prerequisites are Counselor Education, 480, 550, 551, and 554.
- You should file a course of study plan with your advisor before the end of your first semester of full time enrollment in your program. Your plan should be a schedule of your classes culminating in graduation.
- Prior to the term you wish to register for School Counseling Practicum (555) or Internship in School Counseling (558), you must notify the department secretary of your intention one semester prior to taking this class. You will be notified of acceptance and the date of the initial meeting for the term. Pre-registration for Counseling Practicum through the University's pre-registration procedures is not possible. Students participating in practicum and internship must carry student insurance and have verification of a fingerprinting and drug screening test.
- A comprehensive examination for non-thesis master's students is given during the final semester in which the student is enrolled. You must inform the department secretary of your intention to take the exam at least one semester prior to its administration.
- At least one semester prior to the semester you plan to graduate, you must contact your advisor and file an Admission to Candidacy form with the Graduate School. This application must be on file in the Graduate Office before you will be permitted to take the comprehensive examination.
- Licensure by the Tennessee State Department of Education or by other states is granted only after the student makes a formal request to the licensure office in the College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences, 332 BEC. The student should check with that office at least two semesters prior to graduation to be sure that all qualifications are obtained. Applicants for licensure in Tennessee must also pass the School Guidance and Counseling specialty of the National Teachers Examination (Praxis Series). Applicants for certification/licensure in other states should check with the Department of Education for that state because many states require teaching certification/licensure and experience prior to certification as a school counselor.
