Curriculum
For individuals who already have a license as a school counselor, the Ed.S. will allow for classes that supplement this credential. The Ed.S. is an individually planned curriculum. This degree requires 22 semester hours beyond a 48 semester hour Master's degree. Six semester hours are required from an outside program included in the 22 hours

| 5. The non-thesis program requires a comprehensive examination in which the candidate will demonstrate research skill through examination questions. | |
* The Special Topics course is counseling related and the topic changes each semester depending on the specific professional goals of the counseling students. For instance, Crisis Counseling, Child and Adolescent Counseling, and Play Therapy are examples of course content previously offered. ** The elective courses will be determined by the Ed.S. student and his/her advisor and committee members. Depending on the specific professional goals of the student, the student will be advised to take counseling-related courses that enhance each individual's curriculum. Courses commonly taken as electives include, but are not limited to, CFS 540 Parent-Child Relations; CFS 567 Family Violence; CFS 515 Children in Contemporary Society; SW 564 Substance Abuse; SOC 551 Juvenile Delinquency and the Social Structure; CFS 552 Advance Diversity in Children and Families.

| Prerequisite Requirements | |
Category I. Students with licensure who have completed the 48 hour master's program in School Counseling at the University of Tennessee will not be required to take any courses beyond those included in the Ed.S. program in School Counseling. Category II. Students with a master's degree in school counseling requiring less than the 48 hours included in the University of Tennessee program will have to take courses in school-counseling areas not reflected in their masters program in school counseling. Category III. Individuals with a master's degree in a counseling-related area (e.g., Mental Health Counseling) will be required to take the courses in the University of Tennessee's 48-hour School-Counseling Program that were not included in their counseling-related master's program. Category IV. Individuals with a master's degree in a non-counseling area will likely have taken few courses similar to those required in the School-Counseling master's program at the University of Tennessee and, as a result, will need to take the entire University of Tennessee Master's degree program in school counseling.
