School Counseling Program

Ed.S. Degree

The Education Specialist Degree (Ed.S.) is designed to provide advanced training for professional counselors, guidance specialists, and personnel workers.  The program provides more depth than is possible in a M.S. level program, but at the same time retains the essential emphasis upon the application of knowledge in schools and other settings.  The Ed.S. program is designed to serve the following:

  • Experienced counselors whose original training pre-dated many recent advancements in counseling;
  • Students holding M.S. degrees in guidance but desiring additional training;
  • Individuals who wish to shift from one setting or level of counseling to another;
  • Individuals who have M.S. degrees in a related field, who qualify for admission to the Ed.S. program, and who wish advanced study in a counselor education program. Students from related areas must complete all requirements for a school counselor license before completing the Ed.S.

For a student with a School Counselor License, the Ed.S. program requires 22 semester hours beyond a 48 semester hour M.S. The program is individualized and planned by the student and a faculty committee.
