Graduate Programs

Adult Education
The Adult Education Program prepares individuals with varying educational backgrounds and professional experiences for leadership roles in the education of adult learners. The program offers two degrees: Master of Science (M.S.) in Educational Psychology with a concentration in Adult Education, and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Education with a concentration in Educational Psychology and a specialization in Adult Education.

Applied Educational Psychology
The Applied Educational Psychology Program offers a Master of Science (M.S.) in Educational Psychology with a focus on human learning and development. The Learning Environments and Educational Studies doctoral (Ph.D.) program offers a specialization in human learning and development.

Collaborative Learning
The Collaborative Learning Program uses a cohort approach in offering professional practitioners an opportunity to increase their understanding of collaborative learning processes and to develop their skills as facilitators of collaborative learning in professional and volunteer settings. The program offers the following degree: Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Education with a concentration in Educational Psychology and a specialization in Collaborative Learning.

Counselor Education
The Counselor Education Concentration offers a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Education and is designed to prepare experienced counseling professionals to advance their careers in the education and supervision of counselors. The doctoral program is for those students who have completed a masters' degree in counseling or counseling-related fields who aspire to one of the following careers: college, university, or community college teaching positions in Counselor Education or related fields; supervisory positions in schools, community agencies, state departments of education; counseling positions in student development programs and counseling centers in higher education; private mental health counseling/consultation practice; and/or employee assistance positions.

Cultural Studies in Education
The Cultural Studies program offers a Masters of Science (MS) degree and a specialization in the Learning Environments and Educational Studies doctoral (Ph.D.) program. We prepare students to teach in Cultural Studies and Social Foundations of Education within higher education and/or to conduct work in these fields within other applied educational, social and political settings. The program derives its intellectual identity and post-disciplinary orientation from anthropology, history, philosophy, psychology, and sociology, as well as from multiculturalism, ethnography, feminist theory, and other specialized forms of inquiry. Students are expected to obtain a significant grounding in the allied, social foundations.

Evaluation and Assessment
The Evaluation and Assessment Ph.D. specialization is designed for students interested in pursuing careers as university evaluation faculty, evaluators of programs, projects, institutions and organizations; designers of personnel evaluation systems, and designers/teachers of sound practices in student classroom assessment. The program encompasses the evaluation and assessment requirements and needs within diverse educational settings across the P-16 continuum.

Instructional Technology
The Instructional Technology (IT) program prepares leaders in the field of Instructional Technology at the graduate level. IT offers a residential Master of Science (M.S.), distance education Master of Science (M.S.), an education specialists (Ed.S.) degree, and a specialization in the Learning Environments and Educational Studies doctoral (Ph.D.) program. The program in Instructional Technology prepares leaders for  K-12 schools and school systems, for education-related positions in organizations other than schools, and for teaching and supervisory positions in community and senior colleges and universities.

Learning Environments and Educational Studies (pending 2010 University committee approval)
The mission of the doctoral (Ph.D. concentration) in Learning Environments and Educational Studies (LEEDS) is to ground students in theoretical, philosophical and research foundations of human learning and development from an applied educational psychology perspective, cultural and social contexts of educational environments (both formal and informal), the design of technology-supported learning environments, and the skills for inquiring into and critiquing these environments. The proposed doctoral program in Learning Environments and Educational Studies (LEEDS) prepares graduates to work in high level professional careers in higher education, K-12 education, community-based work, engaged scholarship, research institutions and other applied educational, social and political settings.

Mental Health Counseling
The Masters' Program in Mental Health Counseling is a 60-semester hour program, accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP). The program prepares excellent, self-aware counselor practitioners and scholars who may serve in agencies that provide counseling to adults, adolescents, and children. Each student's program is customized to support her or his goals, as well as to provide a common core of counselor preparation. Graduates employ in settings such as mental health centers, programs serving troubled youth or children, drug and alcohol treatment programs, and private practices. Graduates of the program complete the educational and graduate clinical requirements for licensure in Tennessee (as well as in most other states) as professional counselors and mental health service providers and for certification by the National Board of Certified Counselors (NBCC).

Rehabilitation Counseling
The Rehabilitation Counseling Program prepares rehabilitiation counselors to facilitate the movement of persons with a disabilities toward optimal functioning in learning, living, and working. The RCE Program offers a Master of Science (MS) degree and is accredited by the Council on Rehabilitation Education (CORE). The mission of the UT RCE Program is to prepare willing, committed, and competent clinicians who desire to provide appropriate rehabilitation services to people who have disabilities.

School Counseling
The School Counseling Program focuses on the development of competencies for those working in school counseling settings and those working as professional counselors, guidance specialists, and personnel workers. Both the Masters' and Ed.S. degrees in School Counseling provide programs of study to prepare practitioners for school counseling in the 21st century.

Accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs, the program fulfills the licensure requirements for K-12 school counseling in Tennessee and in most other states. More specifically, the program is designed to develop our student's ability to organize and coordinate a school counseling program appropriate to the needs of their schools, to become competent in individual and group counseling, and to develop skills for effective consultation with teachers and parents. The Education Specialist Degree (Ed.S.) is designed to provide advanced training for professional counselors, guidance specialists, and personnel workers.

School Psychology
The School Psychology Program is fully accredited by the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) and the American Psychological Association (APA). It offers advanced training in psychological, educational, and professional foundations leading to licensure as a school psychologist. The program offers two degrees: Educational Specialist (Ed.S.) in Education with a concentration in School Psychology, and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Education with a concentration in School Psychology.
