GRADUATE CERTIFICATE IN QUALITATIVE RESEARCH METHODS IN EDUCATION
A graduate certificate may be earned by successful completion of a series of specific courses. A candidate for a graduate certificate program must be a fully admitted graduate student who has satisfactorily completed the minimum requirements for a certificate as described in the Graduate Catalog. A candidate must be a graduate student in good standing and comply with all other applicable policies. To receive the certificate, students must submit a Completion of Certificate Program Form endorsed by the academic department to the Graduate School. Only those certificate programs that are officially approved by the Graduate Council will be posted on student transcripts. To receive a graduate certificate, students must be admitted to a certificate program or a degree program.
Please note that graduate certificate requirements changed as of fall 2011. Graduate students beginning coursework in fall 2011 or later must meet the new requirements in order to obtain the certificate. If you began your graduate certificate coursework prior to the fall of 2011, you may follow the curricular requirements under which you began your coursework.
Guidelines for the Graduate Certificate in Qualitative Research Methods in Education
The 15 hour graduate certificate in qualitative research methods in education is an interdepartmental program of study that is administered by faculty within the Department of Educational Psychology and Counseling. The certificate is intended for currently admitted graduate students wishing to develop their skills in conducting qualitative research studies. Certificate candidates must currently be admitted to a graduate program at the university or hold a terminal research degree and be admitted to the graduate school.
Requirements
- Educational Psychology 559 (Introduction to Qualitative Research in Education)
- At least one of the following: Educational Psychology 659 (Advanced Qualitative Research in Education), Child and Family Studies 650 (Advanced Qualitative Research in Human Sciences), Educational Administration 618 (Advanced Qualitative Research in Educational Leadership).
- At least three of the following: Educational Psychology 631 (Discourse Analysis in Educational Environments), Educational Administration 617/Higher Education Administration 617 (Case Study Methods in Educational Research), Cultural Studies in Education 660 (Ethnographic Research Methods in Education), Cultural Studies in Education 526 (Philosophy of Education), Educational Psychology 604 (Digital Tools for Qualitative Research.)
- Attainment of a 3.5 grade point average in the certificate coursework.
- A completed peer-reviewed qualitative research study such as a conference presentation, completed qualitative dissertation or qualitative research publication.
