Marla P. Peterson, Professor
Professor Emeritus
Marla is associated with the School Counseling, Mental Health Counseling, and Counselor Education programs. She typically teaches CECP 550 “Introduction to Pupil Personnel Programs,” CECP 561 “Development and Operation of School Counseling Programs,” CECP 552 “Career Development: Vocational Theory, Research, and Practice,” and CECP 553 “Career and Educational Information Systems.” Her research mainly relates to career development and technology applied to teaching university counselor education courses. She has had a number of prominent faculty leadership positions within The University of Tennessee, including past President of the Faculty Senate, member of President John Shumaker’s Transition Team, and member of Advisory Committees to select two Presidents of UT. She and Bill Poppen have co-authored a book entitled School Counselors and the First Freedom. She has a rich history of journal publications and presentations at professional conferences. Most recently, her publications have focused on the electronic delivery of career development courses. Among her several professional honors are the John Tunstall Award as the Outstanding Faculty Member in the College of Education and selection as the Counselor Educator of the Year in the Southern Association of Counselor Education and Supervision. She has varied leisure interests including genealogical research and international travel. She has traveled to Paris annually for the past 10 years and traveled widely in Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Netherlands, Belgium, England, Russia, Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Germany, France, Switzerland, Italy, and Greece.
