Associate Professor
Amy L. Skinner, Associate Professor of Rehabilitation Counseling, has been faculty at the University of Tennessee since January 2000. Dr. Skinner received both her PhD (1999) and her MS (1994) from Mississippi State University and earned a BA (1991) from the University of Alabama. She is a Certified Rehabilitation Counselor (CRC), a Licensed Professional Counselor - Mental Health Service Provider (LPC- State of Tennessee), and a National Certified Counselor (NCC). She served as coordinator of the Rehabilitation Counseling MS Degree Program for six years and as a part time training coordinator for the Southeast Rehabilitation Continuing Education Program (SRCEP).
Dr. Skinner has been active in the rehabilitation counseling field for over 12 years, promoting education and advocacy for expanding community and employment opportunities for people with disabilities. She is a past-president of the Volunteer State Rehabilitation Association and the Southeast Region National Rehabilitation Association. She is Chair of the Board of Directors of Goodwill Industries of Knoxville, Inc. and serves on the (Knoxville) Mayor's Council on Disability Issues. Recently, she was elected Secretary of the Board of Directors of Reading for the Blind and Dyslexic – Tennessee.
Dr. Skinner typically teaches RCE 530 Orientation to Rehabilitation, RCE 545 The Rehabilitation Interview, RCE 544 Cognitive Disabilities, RCE 541 Psychosocial and Multicultural Aspects of Disability, and RCE 533 – Job Analysis, Development, and Placement. She serves on the Editorial Review Boards for the Journal of Rehabilitation and the Rehabilitation Counselors and Educators Journal and has original research published in books and journals that include Rehabilitation Counseling Bulletin, Rehabilitation Education, Psychiatric Rehabilitation Journal, and Journal of Evidence-Based Practices for Schools.
