Fall 2006

Welcome!

Dr. Terrell Strayhorn just returned from the 31st Annual Conference of the Association for the Study of Higher Education (ASHE) which convened in Anaheim, California. The conference was a great success and it provided him with an opportunity to interact with a number of colleagues across the nation. While there, Dr. Strayhorn learned of some very good news! He was awarded the 2006 Outstanding Junior Scholar Award by the Council on Ethnic Participation within the Association for the Study of Higher Education (ASHE). This is the highest honor bestowed upon individual scholars who are no more than
5 years beyond their doctorate. The criteria for selection were: quality of scholarship, sole-authored scholarly contribution(s) to the field of higher education, and service within ASHE. Way to go Dr. Strayhorn! (11/13/2006)

Dr. Terrell Strayhorn is a new Education Psychology and Counseling Assistant Professor and faculty member of the College Student Personnel program. Please stop by to meet and welcome Dr. Strayhorn to the University of Tennessee. His office is located in Claxton Complex, room A316. (posted 7/25/2005)

We've Moved

After a period of turmoil and uncertainty, the Department of Educational Administration and Policy Studies was eliminated, but the programs we had been offering, including the CSP program, were both kept and affirmed. The College Student Personnel Program, along with the doctoral program in Higher Education Administration, moved to the Department of Educational Psychology and Counseling. The programs received a warm welcome from the new department, and despite the name of the department, administration, not counseling, remains the primary orientation for the program.

CSPA in 2005

The spring semester brings a flurry of activity for the College Student Personnel Association (CSPA). After installing new officers in December, CSPA is preparing for the prospective students’ interview weekend, organizing fundraisers, and providing professional development opportunities for its current members. In late February we will welcome candidates for the CSP program and provide them with the opportunity to interview for graduate assistantships. We are also continuing our breakfast series that gives CSP students the chance to speak with current student affairs administrators about the field. The new officers are excited about having another great year with the association and look forward to the upcoming events. If you would like more information on CSPA, e-mail Jodi Middleton at jmiddleton@utk.edu or visit the CSPA website.

CSP Fund Created

Thanks to the kindness and generosity of some of our alums, we are beginning to build a modest CSP fund to help students in the program travel to conferences and to provide for program functions not supported by the University. If you feel you could—--and would want--—to contribute to this fund, in whatever amount (no amount is too small), please make your check payable to the University of Tennessee, and send it to Dr. Norma T. Mertz, University of Tennessee, A315 Claxton, Knoxville, TN 37916. Please be sure to indicate that you want the money to go to the UT CSP fund on the subject line of your check. And if you feel you would like to make a regular contribution to the fund, again, however small you may think the amount you can share is, contact Dr. Mertz about how to go about this (nmertz@utk.edu).

We want to hear from you!

We are trying to keep an active database of alumni contact information. This information will be used when sending out information about job postings and other important program updates. In order to do this we need to have the support of our alums. We would appreciate if you would send any updated information about yourself or other alums who may have lost contact with us to Karen Crumley at kcrumle1@utk.edu. If you do not want your information to be made available to other alums, please, let us know. Thanks! We look forward to hearing from you!
