Welcome from the CSP Coordinator
Dr. Norma T. Mertz

Welcome to the CSP web site. The site is designed to provide information about the program and to allow you to apply to the program on-line. No site can supply all of the information you may seek or answer particular questions you may have, so feel free to contact me with those questions and concerns (nmertz@utk.edu; 865-974-6150)

The College Student Personnel program is a two-year, practitioner-oriented master's degree program designed to prepare student personnel administrators to serve the student and administrative needs of colleges and universities. Philosophically based in higher education, administration, and resting on standards articulated by the Council for the Advancement of Standards for Student Services/Student Development programs, the program prepares individuals for the wide and growing variety of student university service positions in post-secondary education including: admissions, advising, orientation, housing, athletics, disability services, career counseling, international education, alumni relations, student activities, Greek life, financial aid, recruiting, and recreation.

The College Student Personnel program at the University of Tennessee has been in operation for more than 40 years, and is the only graduate program in the state that prepares entry-level student personnel administrators. The program is small (15 - 18 students are admitted for study each year), selective, and emphasizes experiential learning. Students in the program complete two internships in addition to any assistantship or work position they may hold. Internship opportunities abound in the University, in area institutions, throughout the country, and internationally.

The faculty who serve the program are a diverse group of scholars and practitioners with a breadth of theoretical knowledge and practical expertise in higher education, student affairs, first year studies, law and administration. Students who study in the program come from a variety of geographic areas, undergraduate institutions, and academic disciplines. Graduates from the program are highly successful in securing employment in the student affairs/student services profession throughout the United States.

Again, welcome to our site. Feel free to browse through the site and learn more about us. And don't hesitate to contact us, whether you are a prospective student, current student, or one of our many amazing alums.
