Collaborative Learning Doctoral Program

Cohorts

Collaborative Learning Program participants are admitted as members of a cohort. A new cohort is admitted every two years. Beginning in the first semester, students enroll in the doctoral seminar for four semesters, excluding summers.

Although all cohort members travel together throughout the two-year alternative residency, not all members take the same courses, and not all members enroll in the same courses at the same time. The schedule of a particular member's course work depends on such factors as academic experience prior to entering the program and particular interests within the broad area of collaborative learning.

Graduation chairing ceremony

Each graduate of the CL program is awarded a rocking chair with his/her name, date of graduation and cohort number engraved on a plaque and placed on the back of the chair. This chair is then made a part of a circle of such chairs in the fashion of Highlander's conference center and in the spirit of our program's way of being in a teaching/learning experience. The circle of chairs is located in a room in Dorothy and Mel Stulberg's home off Northshore Drive. We hope to find a "permanent" home for the chairs and others to be awarded to future graduates. In addition to the regular-sized rocker, each awardee receives a mini-rocker that they can take with them following the ceremony.

In addition to graduates of the program, three chairs have been awarded to faculty for various special reasons. We awarded chairs to John Shotter and Rom Harre in honor of their contributions to the program, including the courses they taught here two years ago. John Peters was honored with a chair in his name, given by cohorters in C1 through C3.
