Applied Educational Psychology Program

Ph.D. Degree

This program is in the process of being restructured as a specialization within the new doctoral concentration, Learning Environments and Educational Studies (LEEDS). Upon approval LEEDS will begin admitting students for fall 2010.

Financial Support

Priority for graduate assistantship awards is given to full-time students admitted to the Department's doctoral programs. Financial support (with a tuition fee waiver) mainly comes from teaching and research assistantships funded through the Department, and from assistantships available in other sectors of the University. Some students qualify for fellowships. First-year doctoral students are given priority for many of the assistantships administered through the Department.

Department faculty are committed to making every effort to secure funding for all doctoral students who are making adequate progress toward their degrees. Unfortunately, such funding cannot be guaranteed given current realities at the university. In the past, virtually all doctoral students in the Department of Educational Psychology who desired financial assistance received some form of funding throughout all or most of their doctoral program. We have every reason to expect this to continue in the future.

Attempts will be made to match students and preferred funding sources. Accordingly, you should submit a statement indicating (1) the kind of assistantship you prefer and (2) the reasons why you feel that you're qualified for that kind of assistantship.

Once a student makes a commitment to accept an offered graduate assistantship, she or he may not withdraw from the position to secure another position without informing the Department Head, the program advisor, and assistantship supervisor directly responsible for the position from which the student is withdrawing. No student will receive alternate funding for a current academic year if a funded position is lost to the Department because of the student's actions. Therefore, students should consider carefully any position before accepting it and immediately discuss with their faculty advisor any difficulty arising in the position so that appropriate remedial actions may be implemented. Students who lose funding through no fault of their own will be assisted in securing alternate funding.
