John Peters was awarded the 2008 Excellence in Academic Outreach Award for his outstanding service and achievement. The land-grant mission of The University of Tennessee directs us to use our intellectual capital to benefit the state's citizens. The Academic Outreach Award goes to a faculty member who exemplifies this part of the university's mission. The 2008 Academic Outreach award goes to John Peters, professor of educational psychology and counseling. Since Peters came to UT in 1970, he has built an impressive record of academic outreach through teaching, scholarship and service. He uses his expertise to engage relationships, which improve the skills of university students as well as practitioners in the community. In fact, his work led to the development of a doctoral program specializing in collaborative learning. Throughout it all, he has brought his students along, mentoring them as they learn to serve their community with their own expertise. In his nomination letter, a colleague wrote, "A faculty's skill and knowledge sets sometimes match current needs. However, needs are constantly changing. Dr. Peters' accomplishments show that he's adjusted his outreach efforts to meet these changing needs for almost four decades."

Julie Harden was awarded the John Tunstall Outstanding Staff Award which is awarded annually to a staff member who has executed their duties in an exemplary manner in support of those programs which prepare "teachers, administrators, or other entering the field of education."

School Psychology program faculty ranked second nationally in faculty publication. At the 2006 annual conference of the National Association of School Psychologist researcher presented data on publication rates of faculty from American Psychological Association (APA) approved programs (Wagner, Lail, & Viglietta, 2006). Specifically, they calculated average publication rates based on psycINFO (includes professional journal articles and book chapters) of faculty from all 56 APA school psychology programs from 2000-2005. The UT School Psychology faculty ranked second.

In a similar study covering the 5 previous years (1995-1999) UT School Psychology faculty ranked third in average peer reviewed journal (this study did not include book chapters) publications (Carper & Williams, 2004). When these two studies are combined it is clear that the UT School Psychology faculty is among the most productive scholars over the past 11 years. Complete news item. (Posted 5/2/06)
