Terrell L. Strayhorn, Ph.D.

Dr. Strayhorn is Assistant Professor of Higher Education in the Department of Educational Psychology and Counseling. He has teaching responsibilities in both the master’s College Student Personnel program and the doctoral Higher Education Administration program.

Dr. Strayhorn’s research and scholarly activities focus on two aspects of higher education: the institution and the individual. At a macro level, he has particular interests in higher education governance and policy, the role of federal and state governments in postsecondary education, graduate education, and the history of higher education with an emphasis on the history of Black education and desegregation in America.

At a micro level, Professor Strayhorn’s teaching and research interests focus on assessing student learning and development in college, student persistence, and the intersectionality of race and class in America with an emphasis on the way in which such factors influence specific outcomes of college. He is particularly interested in using appropriate techniques to examine the effect of macro-level variables on micro-level outcomes. Therefore, he makes use of integrated econometric models and interdisciplinary frameworks to make new contributions to old questions.

Methodologically, he is interested in the application of multivariate statistical procedures and multilevel models in educational research. He draws on qualitative techniques and naturalistic forms of inquiry when appropriate. He will teach courses on research design, qualitative research methods, and research applications in education.

Dr. Strayhorn is principal author of a forthcoming book titled, Frameworks for Assessing Learning and Development Outcomes (2006). Recent publications include: “Democratic education and public universities in America” (Strayhorn, 2005) and “Crime on Virginia’s College and University Campuses” (Janosik, Gregory, & Strayhorn, 2005). Other research projects focus on predicting graduate student persistence, social justice and minority-serving institutions, and articles on the nature of professional life for student affairs administrators, to name a few.

Dr. Strayhorn is active in several professional associations including the Association for the Study of Higher Education (ASHE), Association for Institutional Research (AIR), American Educational Research Association (AERA), American College Personnel Association (ACPA), Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education (CAS), National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA), and the National Association for Student Affairs Professionals (NASAP). He currently serves on the editorial boards for The NASAP Journal, The Qualitative Report, and The College Student Affairs Journal.

Dr. Strayhorn received his B.A. degree from The University of Virginia, his M.Ed. degree in educational policy from the Curry School of Education at The University of Virginia, and a Ph.D. in Higher Education from Virginia Tech. He has served as instructor or graduate teaching assistant at The University of Virginia, Marymount University, and Virginia Tech.
