DPHD Awards
DPHD
has two awards named in honor of former DPHD members who made a great
contribution to the field of physical and health disabilities.
Joan Wald Baken Award
The Joan Wald Baken Award was established in 1997 to honor the memory of the devoted member of DPHD who dedicated herself to individuals with physical and health disabilities. Up to two awards are given annually to individuals whose accomplishments represent exemplary advocacy and educational practice. The recipient must be involved in direct delivery of services to individuals with physical and health disabilities in schools, hospitals, clinics, homes, or in the community. Self nominations or nominations by colleagues will be accepted. To apply for this award, submit the following:

Elizabeth Wetzel Scholarship Award
The Elizabeth Wetzel Scholarship awards up to $500 to students working toward a teaching credential in physical and health disabilities. To apply for this scholarship, submit the following:

Albert R. Goldsmith Teacher Award **(NEW)**
The Albert R. Goldsmith Teacher Award is being established to honor a lifelong CEC member who left a very generous donation in his estate to DPHD. Mr. Goldsmith was a teacher of students who were served in home placements in Pennsylvania; he made contributions in numerous ways to his community that impacted the lives of children with and without disabilities. The award will grant $250 to a teacher for instructional materials for students in general or special education classrooms, home settings, or hospital settings. Up to two awards will be given annually to teachers who teach students birth through 22 years old who have physical, health, or multiple disabilities. Applicants should (1) have been a member of DPHD for a minimum of two years, (2) submit a statement that includes a description of how the money will be spent and what student needs will be met with the materials that are purchased, and (3) within three months of receiving the award, submit a short synopsis to be published in the DPHD newsletter that describes how receiving the award made a difference in your instruction, what was purchased, and how the purchase benefited the student(s). Application materials should be submitted by December 31. The executive board will vote by March 1 on applicants and the selected recipient(s) will receive the award(s) at the annual convention (or the award will be sent following the convention if the recipient is unable to attend the convention.) To apply for this award, submit the following:
*Personal Information: Name, address, telephone number, and email address*Summary Statement: A 200 – 400 word narrative stating (1) length of DPHD membership, (2) length of time teaching and population of students served, (3) a description of how the money will be spent , (4) a description of how the materials purchased will benefit directly students who have physical, health, or multiple disabilities, (5) an acknowledgement and agreement that, upon receiving the money, a short synopsis or article will be submitted to the DPHD newsletter editor stating how the money was used and how it benefitted the students directly.
