Lester Eugene Asheim (22 January 1914-1 July 1997) published notable works on book selection,
manpower for librarianship, communication, and international librarianship.
- Born in Spokane, Washington on January 22, 1914.
- Graduated from University of Washington with a B.A.in Librarianship in 1937 and M.A. in Literature, in 1941.
- Worked as a librarian at the US Federal Penitenitay, Washington from 1941 to 1942.
- Received PH.D from University of Chicago in 1949.
- Taught in the Graduate Library School at the University of Chicago from 1948 to 1952.
- Served as the dean of the University of Chicago Graduate Library School from 1952 till 1961.
- Became the director of International relations office for the American Library Association in 1961,
and then became the director of the ALA's office for library education until 1974.
- Served as a faculty member at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill until 1984
- ALISE award for Professional Contribution to Library and Information Science Education.
- Died on July 1, 1997 at Carolina Meadows Retirement home.
