The purpose of this scavenger hunt is to locate information about acceptable use policies (AUPs). Find and summarize information about the purpose of AUPs, what they cover in terms of the World Wide Web, students, teachers, and parents, and how they are implemented. Try more than one approach with your searches to obtain optimum resources.

Remember to include your search strategy along with your answers to the questions below. Did you use a search engine? Which one? What was the query or search string you used? How long did it take you to complete this activity?

E-mail your answers directly to Dr. Doak (ddoak@utk.edu), Ashley (montgome@utk.edu), and Jamie (jnelson8@utk.edu). Please DO NOT mail these answers to the class list. 

1. Locate three on-line AUPs for K-12 schools, universities, or organizations. Write a brief summary outlining the similarities in content. How do they deal with AUP violations? What are the consequences?

2. You may have computers with Internet access in your classroom. Assume your school system or organization doesn't have a standard AUP, locate at least two sites that discuss writing an Acceptable Use Policy. What advice do they give for dealing with students and parents or co-workers? Do they cover personal web pages and their content?

3. Write a brief outline for an AUP you could use in your classroom or organization. Give your reasons for why you have included (or excluded) certain elements in your AUP. This is not a comprehensive outline, think of it as the preliminary phase for designing an AUP to answer these questions:

  1. Why is there a need for an AUP?
  2. To whom does it apply?
  3. Are there consequences for violation and what are they?
  4. When and how would you implement this AUP?
