Attendance and Attention

This class will meet every Tuesday from 2:10-4:55 pm in Claxton Addition Room 12. The hands-on nature of this course makes daily attendance a must for all students. Students shall receive one point for attendance of each class. No attendance credit if tardy (tardy is anytime after instructor starts class).

Once class has started please be courteous and give all your attention to the instructors. Reading e-mail, browsing the Web, or working on other assignments are not appropriate activities during demonstrations.

Classes are structured so that there is a demonstration period followed by hands-on lab time. Information needed to complete activities is given during the demonstration so it is important to listen carefully and possibly take notes if needed.

HTML Authoring

Please follow these guidelines during the HTML section of this course.

  1. Students will create their own Web pages using the authoring language HTML. Editors are not to be used for projects in this class. The goal is to learn HTML by writing HTML.

  2. Students should work on their HTML documents from the hard drive. This not only improves the editing process, it also decreases the possibility of corrupting files on your disk.

  3. HTML documents written for assignments MUST be done using SimpleText on the Mac and/or WordPad or NotePad on the PC.

  4. DO NOT USE wordprocessors such as WordPerfect, Clarisworks, Microsoft Word, etc. due to problems with converting documents between platforms and/or software packages.

Formatting Disks

Those of you switching between the Mac and Windows should format your disks on the Mac. Formatting the Windows disks on the Mac makes it easier to switch between the two platforms.

  1. Insert your disk (formatted or unformatted) into the disk drive.
  2. From the Special menu select Erase Disk...
  3. Choose DOS 1.4 MB from the pulldown menu.
  4. Name your disk.
  5. Select Erase.
  6. You can now use your disk on either platform.

Windows to Mac and Back

To "ease" the compatibility issues between Mac and Windows do the following:

  1. On the Windows platform use WordPad (preferred) or NotePad as your text processing program. (Note*: other word processing programs are problematic and should be avoided.)
  2. Limit suffix to (3) three characters (.txt, .htm, .stm, etc.) i.e. INDEX.HTM
  3. "Save As" Text as the file type.
  4. When this Windows file is open in SimpleText, on the Mac you will see a box at the beginning of each line. Ignore this; it will not cause any difficulties.
  5. To open your files on the Mac launch SimpleText FIRST, then open the HTM document from the File menu.
