Carefully read the requirements for each assignment before submitting your work. It is important to also listen to verbal instructions given in class as the nature of some assignments may change based on class experiences. Use the Quick Reference guide to locate resources relevant to the assignments. Please do not hesitate to ask questions related to course opportunities. 

E-Mail

    E-mail a personal biography to the class list you have created in either your PINE Address Book or your WEBMAIL Address Book and "Cc:" a copy to ddoak@utk.edu, montgome@utk.edu and jnelson8@utk.edu. In your bio, address the following questions:
    • What are 5 major topics/subject areas that are of interest to you (These can be professional interests, your program of study, areas of interest you hope to develop further, and even subtopics of these areas.)?
    • How might you (as teacher or researcher) use e-mail?
    • What skills could be facilitated by the student use of e-mail?

WWW Discoveries: Honing Your Search Strategies

    The focus of this course is the Internet and telecommunications. You are expected to spend time outside of class participating in these activities. Each week you should spend time on the Internet browsing or searching for information and resources. Send an e-mail to the class describing three NEW sites you found. Include the following:
    • URLs
    • site title
    • creator if known
    • date accessed
    Include the topic and general content description so that a classmate may determine whether or not to visit the site. Everyone should regularly be adding any sites of interest to their Bookmark File which will be turned in later in the semester.

    WWW Discovery 2 - Research, Personal, & Unusual/Funny Sites (September 29)

    • Research site: Locate a resource dealing with your content area or major focus of study.
    • Personal site: Find a resource pertaining to your hobbies, interests, or needs.
    • Unusual, funny, or silly site: Get a good laugh or share some cyber-pizza!
    WWW Discovery 3 - HTML Resources [On-line tutorials or other "helpers"; NOT graphics or design] (October 13)
    WWW Discovery 4 - Encyclopedia Sites such as people, places, dictionaries. Discuss the subject area and content of the sites you choose. (October 27)
    WWW Discovery 5 - Using the Web to Teach: Locate Sites that provide resources for your teaching content area [These sites may be included in the Hypertext Project] (November 24)

Discussion Room

    The Discussion Room is an area set up for you to discuss and share information, ideas, and questions with your classmates and instructor(s). Following each class you will be responsible for making one posting pertaining to the information taught in that class. Postings should include one or more of the following:
    • A summary statement of what you learned in class the preceding week.
    • A question you have regarding the topic(s) or material taught in class or a response to a classmates posted question.
    • Additional points of information to add to the topic(s).
    • Site of the week (the site you consider to be the "best" you found in your searches). Include the URL and a brief description of the site.
    Besides email, this will be your other main avenue of communication throughout this course. Therefore, feel free to post as often as you'd like and to initiate your own discussion topic relating to the course. Please also help your fellow classmates by answering their questions.

    Dates Due: One each week beginning September 15, the final posting to be made on December 1.
    Points: 1 per Discussion Room Posting. Total of 12 points possible.

WWW Search

    You will conduct three searches on three topics and provide a write-up on one subject index search (utilizes a subject list),one search engine (utilizes keywords), andone meta search engine. You must record the search string or query you used, the name of the engine, the results of your query, and comments concerning the results and the engines. You will also evaluate the search engines and include general information, features, and tips.

    For the subject index record the following:

    1. name of the subject index you used
    2. headings you browsed
    3. results of your browsing
    4. comments concerning the results and the index
    For the search engine record the following:
    1. name of the engine you used
    2. search string or query
    3. results of your query
    4. comments concerning the results and the engine
    For the meta search engine record the following:
    1. name of the engine you used
    2. search engines selected
    3. search string or query
    4. results of your browsing
    5. comments concerning the results

Scavenger Hunts

    During the course you will be asked to use resources on the Internet to complete 2 scavenger hunt activities. Please submit the answers via e-mail to Dr. Doak, Ashley Montgomery, and Jamie Nelson. In your response include the search strategy used, key terms, the engine employed, URLs and other information you gleaned from the sites.

    Scavenger Hunt 1: Graphics and Guidelines for Web Page Design.
    Scavenger Hunt 2: Acceptable Use Policies.

    Dates Due: Scav. Hunt 1 - October 6 , Scav. Hunt 2 - November 10
    Points: 10 points per Hunt. Total of 20 points possible.

Portable Bookmark File

    Create a portable bookmark file with Netscape. This bookmark file should include all links you have visited or reported on during the course (weekly discoveries, scavenger hunts, searches, etc.) and annotations (brief site summary). Organize the sites into categories using the folders and dividers and continue to update it after the due date.

Web Page Plan

    Using index cards create a model for your Web pages. The cards should contain the information to be used in your pages and indicate the placement or use of graphics, background colors, tables, animation, and links. Remember to address the basic questions: Who is the audience? What do I want to communicate? What graphics do I plan to use? What background? What colors? What links to other sites? etc.

Comprehensive Homepage or Organizational Page

    The purpose of a homepage is to communicate with others on the World Wide Web. The homepage you develop should leave the viewer with an impression of who you are as an individual or organization. Each student will design a personal homepage with a resume/vita or an organizational page, upload it to utk web and present it to the class. This page should be based on the design discussed earlier. The organizational pagemay be a site for a classroom, school, academic or professional organization, or business. The same requirements must be met as for the comprehensive homepage with resume.

    Requirements (discussed further in class):

    1. Front or greeting page with links to other pages.
    2. An interactive vita or resume.
    3. A page of links.
    4. Hypertext Research Project (To be added later).
    5. Another page of your choice.

Hypertext Research Project

    Using the Internet as your primary resource create a hypertext reportwith links to explain how you could use the Internet to teach a specific subject. The report or lesson plan should discuss teacher uses as well as student uses.

    Questions you should address:

    • What is available for you the teacher?
    • What resources, professional or educational, can you access?
    • How would you have your students use the Internet?
    • What are some concerns for teachers and students on the Internet?
    Other Requirements:
    • You must include hypertext links to references used in body as well as in bibliography.
    • You should use APA Style when setting up the bibliography.
    • This report should be uploaded to your UNIX account with appropriate links.
    Remember to provide linksto illustrate your ideas. Be prepared to share your report with the class.
