Welcome to Douglas W. Canfield's Homepage

Douglas W. Canfield is the Coordinator of the Language Resource Center at The University of Tennessee . His background is in French instruction via hybrid courses with significant online modules . His research explores music and videoclips as catalysts for the Chomskyan “Language Acquisition Device”, the creation of discourse and gaming communities for language instruction and research, and the leveraging of open-source and low-affect technologies in language resource centers.

Canfield is a member of the International Assocation for Language Learning Technology (IALLT), the Computer Assisted Language Instruction Consortium (CALICO) and the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL).

Among his other scholarly works, his presentation, "Breathing a SecondLife into the L2 Curriculum : Google, Gaming, and Language Learning for the GNUbie", was the Henderson Plenary Award winner for IALLT 2007: The Next Revolution in Language Learning Technology, held June 19-23 in Boston.

Supervising a fine team of student assistants, his goals include fostering the use of technology for instruction, communication, collaboration, and recreation. He lives in the Knoxville area with his wife, Jessica, and their five children.
