Course Description
This course is an introduction to the field of human-computer interaction with a focus the design and evaluation of the interfaces to information systems. Students will be introduced to the topics of interaction design, describing user competencies, defining user requirements, user interface design, and evaluating interaction success. In addition, they will gain hands-on experience with user interviewing and user interface design specification and test construction.

Sharp, Y, Rogers, H., & Preece, J. 2007. Interaction Design: Beyond Human-Computer Interaction. 2nd edition. New York: J. Wiley & Sons.
The required readings are noted on the course schedule. Note that additional readings may be assigned during the semester as needed.

Course Objectives
This course is an elective that is determined by SIS faculty to contain specialized knowledge useful to most information professionals. The course will provide skills that coordinate those acquired by students in such specialized electives as 565, 567, 582, 583, and 585. Students should be able to:

Course Delivery and Teaching Strategy
This course is offered on campus only. The course includes lectures, class discussions,group interaction, demonstrations, field-experience, and hands-on practice.

Expectations/Requirements
What you gain from this course will depend on the amount of time and work you invest each week. Like other required courses, this course is demanding in terms of time and effort. Therefore, you must dedicate adequate time to complete the required activities.

Making an "A" in this course will depend on you and not us, since the grade will reflect your achievement.

This course is characterized by stimulating challenge in a collaborative learning atmosphere. We expect you to demonstrate critical thinking and problem solving skills, participate in class discussions, and complete the course requirements satisfactorily and on time.

This course is structured to be a rewarding learning experience that will provide meaning for you as an information professional, or as a professional from another field that focuses on the role of human-computer interaction.

Students must have adequate computing skills, including use of word processing, Web browsers, e-mail, including sending and receiving attachment files; and PowerPoint. The Office of Information Technology (OIT) offers free online classes to students. Advanced registration is required.

Submission of Assignments/Projects
Assignments and projects must be submitted in hard copy or emailed as attachment files to her GTA Sarah Culp (sculp@utk.edu). Emailed assignments are due the morning of the due date whereas hard copies are due at the scheduled class time. Assignments must not be printed out during class at BEC. Late assignments will receive a reduced credit of two points of the total grade for each day they are late and may result in additional penalty.

Lecture Notes
The instructor will make lecture notes availabile on her webpage. The notes do not substitute for reading the assigned materials.

Disabilities

Readings and Class Participation
You are responsible for the assigned readings every week. In a professional environment you would be conversing with your colleagues. We expect a similar effort in this class. Class participation and timely completion of the required readings will account for 5% of the total grade.

Attendance
Attendance is expected because class discussions are an important part of mastering the content of the course. If you miss a class, notify the instructors as soon as possible so that not points are deducted from the participation grade. You are responsible for taking notes from your classmates about the class session you miss.

Cheating and Plagiarism
When you write for this class or when you conduct online searches, remember that any sources you use should be credited including materials from the Web. If you use someone's words or ideas without attribution, you will be plagiarizing. Remember that cheating and plagiarism are violations of scholarly and professional ethics as well as University policy. If you cheat or plagiarize, you will fail the course and could face further actions such as suspension from the academic program and the University. Use the APA Style Manual for citing sources used for this class and be consistent in formatting the citations.

Grades
Grades will be assigned according to the following scale

A 92-100% Excellent
B+ 86-91% Very Good
B 80-85% Good
C+ 75-79% Marginal
C 70-74% Below graduate level

Performance Evaluation
Students will be evaluated based on the quality of assignments/projects and adherence to guidelines set by the instrutor.
