Travis White was a good friend and roommate of Shawn Adams, and the creator of this trophy. Baylor School, for the second year in a row, was the location of this year's Shawn Tournament. There were about 5 or 6 teams there, and some of them went home after Saturday's play. I can't remember the circumstances but both Eddie Lampton and I had to go back to Knoxville Saturday night, a 100 mile drive. It looked like the tournament was going to last a second day, so Eddie and I drove back Sunday morning! Folks were about to call the tournament quits and play pick-up, but an Atlanta conglomerate team (I think) decided that they had enough to play one game for the tournament championship (I think they went undefeated on Saturday, as we did). It was a close game, but we managed to squeak it out at the end. Eddie Lampton, AJ Prassad and I went to Shawn's grave site to share a beer and the trophy with him before heading back home.
I recall we brought a few new players to this tournament. One of them eventually asked me who Shawn was, and what was the deal with having a tournament in his honor. I realized then that, although the events of that day in April of 1994 are a permanent part of Ultimate and life for me, it is something that "newbies" will have to be told about from time to time.
