A WebQuest for 12th Grade (Geology) Designed by A. C. Willis
Introduction | Task | Process | Evaluation | Conclusion | Credits Introduction Barrier islands have played an
important role in preserving the processes of the coast. Barrier
islands have also grown to be great vacation spots after development.
It is not known to most people that barrier islands are also a great natural
habitat to many animals and resources. There has been a long debate
concerning developing many "untouched" barrier islands. Many people
say that the revenue gained would far outweigh the resources lost on the
islands. You should make the decision for yourselves. Should
barrier islands be developed?
The Task Your main task that I expect from you will be to come to your own conclusion of whether or not barrier islands should be allowed to be developed farther. Be prepared to defend your conclusion
on the development of barrier islands in a five page paper and an oral
presentation supporting your conclusion, (pro or con).
The Process In order to accomplish this task, I have provided you with various links that have information on barrier islands, coastal processes, and developed islands. 1) This project will be done
in teams of four that I have preassigned.
CONS: Coastal processes-Pay attention to longshore drift and the pictures. Oceans-Go to chapter 17 and learn of various processes of the ocean. PROS: 4) Make a list of pros and
cons as a group.
Evaluation Your group will be evaluated on
the list of pros and cons created. This will be 25% of your grade.
You will be evaluated on your individual five page paper. This will
be 75% of your grade. Remember to support your conclusion with specific
evidence from the web.
Conclusion By now you should have worked as a group to gather some pros and cons of developing barrier islands. You have learned a great deal about coastal processes and made a personal decision on whether or not the islands should be developed. Use this knowledge that you have gained and think about how development has effected East Tennessee and how future development will effect it.
