Protein Explorer
Retinoid X Receptor
There are four protein chains in this molecule that bind to a response element consisting of two half-sites encoded in the DNA, upstream of target genes.
RXR consists of 13 alpha helices and 8 beta strands, with zero disulfide bridges. Eight zinc atoms are the only ligands involved in the native structure, participating in zinc finger DNA-binding motifs to fit into the major groove for binding of response elements.
There are hydrophobic cores to each chain subunit, though most residues are polar to interact with deoxyribonucleic acid in an aqueous environment.
