Director: Dr. Dixie Thompson

Dr. Dixie L. Thompson is the Director of the Center for Physical
Activity and Health and an Associate Professor in the Department
of Exercise, Sport and Leisure Studies at the University of Tennessee.
Her primary research focus is on the health benefits that women
experience through regular exercise. Dr. Thompson is the Associate
Editor-in-Chief for “ACSM’s Health and Fitness Journal”
and is on the editorial board of “ACSM’s Fit Society
Page Newsletter.” Dr. Thompson also serves as the Chair of
the Physical Fitness Council of the American Alliance for Health,
Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance.
Faculty
Dr. David Bassett
Dr. David Bassett is a professor in the Dept. of Exercise, Sport,
and Leisure Studies. He is the author of numerous research articles
and book chapters, and is a leading expert in the objective measurement
of physical activity. He is a Fellow of the American College of
Sports Medicine and has served as an Associate Editor of Medicine
& Science in Sports & Exercise.
Dr. Gene Fitzhugh

Dr. Eugene Fitzhugh is an assistant professor in the Dept. of Exercise,
Sport, and Leisure Studies. His research expertise is epidemiology,
and has published many papers using epidemiological techniques.
He provides a vital link between the exercise science faculty and
the public health community.
Dr. Edward Howley

Dr. Edward Howley is a professor emeritus in the Deptartment of Exercise, Sport,
and Leisure Studies. He is the author of numerous publications including
research papers, textbooks, and book chapters. He served as President
of the American College of Sports Medicine in 2002-2003 and is currently
Editor-in-Chief of ACSM's Health and Fitness Journal. His research
interests include metabolic responses to exercise, the effects of
training, and the role of physical activity in weight loss and weight
maintenance.
