Ginger snaps

3/4 cup shortening
1/4 cup molasses
1 cup sugar
1 egg
2 teaspoons soda
2 cups flour
1/2 teaspoon cloves
1/2 teaspoon ginger
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon salt.  

Melt shortening, remove from heat and let cool.  Add sugar, molasses and egg.  Beat well. Sift flour, soda, cloves, ginger, cinnamon, and salt.  Add to first mixture and mix well.  Chill.  Form into balls, roll in surgar, place on greased cookie sheet.  Bake 375 degrees for 8-10 minutes.  Best taste comes from making these with bacon grease for the shortening but, of course, they're not as healthy that way!
