The Center for Materials Processing at The University of Tennessee,
Knoxville was initiated as a Center of Excellence in 1985 through the Tennessee
Higher Education Commission. The Center's objective is to develop significant
research and academic programs that address the specific needs of American
industry in the field of materials processing.
The Center's activities are directed by Dr.
Carl J. McHargue.

The accomplishment of this spectrum of activities and research requires
an interdisciplinary approach to many areas of investigation. Faculty and
staff in the Materials Science and Engineering and Textile, Retail &
consumer Science departments are central to the support of the Center,
yet participating researchers come from all engineering disciplines, including
Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical and Aerospace
Engineering and Engineering Science, and Nuclear Engineering.
Faculty from other colleges and schools and from The University ofTennessee
take part in Center activities.
