Undergraduate Programs

GreekGreek

  • The B.A. Major Concentration in Greek consists of 30 hours including 18 hours of Greek language courses numbered above 200 plus 12 hours to be drawn from the following: any courses in the Classics Department numbered 200 or above (excluding 201 and 273) or from History 382 and 400, and Philosophy 320.
  • The Honors Greek Concentration consists of 30 hours. The student must maintain a minimum B+ average in Greek language courses and a minimum cumulative B+ average at UT. In addition, of the 12 non-language hours described in the regular major, 6 must be in courses numbered 300 or higher. In total, the student must take a minimum of 15 hours of Honors courses, not all of which need to be in the major subject area. The student will present an Honors thesis, for which 3 hours of independent study credit will be earned; the thesis must receive a grade of B+ or higher to permit graduation with Honors.
  • The Greek Minor consists of 18 hours including 12 hours of Greek language courses numbered above 200, and 6 hours chosen from Classics Department courses numbered 200 or above or from History 382 and 400, and Philosophy 320.

  • The B.A. Major Concentration in Latin consists of 30 hours including 18 hours of Latin language courses numbered above 200 plus 12 hours to be drawn from the following: any courses in the Classics Department numbered 200 or above (excluding 201 and 273) or from History 382 and 400, Philosophy 320.
  • The Honors Latin Concentration consists of 30 hours. The student must maintain a minimum B+ average in Latin language courses and a minimum cumulative B+ average at UT. In addition, of the 12 non-language hours described in the regular major, 6 must be in courses numbered 300 or higher. In total, the student must take a minimum of 15 hours of Honors courses, not all of which need to be in the major subject area. The student will present an Honors thesis, for which 2 hours of independent study credit will be earned; the thesis must receive a grade of B+ or higher to permit graduation with Honors.
  • The Latin Minor consists of 18 hours including 12 hours of Latin language courses numbered above 200, and 6 hours chosen from Classics Department courses numbered 200 or above or from History 382 and 400, and Philosophy 320.

CivilizationClassical Civilization

  • The B.A. Major Concentration in Classical Civilization consists of 30 hours including Classics 201 plus 27 additional hours numbered 200 or above, of which 15 must be numbered 300 or above. These may be Classics courses or from these: History 382 and 400, Philosophy 320. Students are encouraged to satisfy the foreign language requirement with Greek or Latin
  • The Minor in Classical Civilization consists of 18 hours including Classics 201 plus 15 additional hours numbered 200 or above, of which 9 hours must be numbered 300 or above. These may be Classics courses or drawn from these: History 382 and 400, Philosophy 320.
  • The Honors Classical Civilization Concentration consists of 30 hours including Classics 201 plus 27 additional hours numbered 200 or above, of which 18 must be numbered 300 or above. These may be Classics courses or from these: History 382, 400, Philosophy 320.. The required core of the concentration is Classics 201, which the student must pass with a B+ or better. 9 hours may be from any courses in the Classics department numbered 200 and above (excluding 273). In strict consultation with a departmental advisor, the student pursuing Honors in Classical Civilization will select an additional 15 hours from Classics courses numbered 300 or above, History 382 and 400, and Philosophy 320, to design a program that will advance his or her understanding of a particular specialty with the field of Classical Civilization. To graduate with Honors, the student must maintain a minimum B+ average in Classics Department courses and a minimum cumulative B+ average at UT. In total, the student must take a minimum of 15 hours of Honors courses, not all of which need to be in the major subject area. The student will present an Honors thesis, for which 3 hours of independent study credit will be earned; the thesis must receive a grade of B+ or higher to permit graduation with Honors.
