| THE
TIMELINE VIEWER
Before moving on, it's helpful to provide a more detailed
explaination of the Timeline Viewer, which was one of the iMovie controls
mentioned in the "iMovie Controls" section.
If you recall, the Timeline Viewer appears when you
click on the little clock. It has added some nifty features in iMovie
2. You can scroll through your whole movie, select clips and choose Faster
and Slower to create slow-motion and fast-motion effects. (You'll see
a double-headed arrow appear on the clip to indicate that you've speeded
it up or slowed it down.) You can also select a sound effect, music track,
or vocal track and choose Fade in or Fade Out. The Zoom in/Zoom Out feature
allows you to magnify or reduce the scale of the entire Timeline Viewer.

Another neat feature of the Timeline Viewer is that
if you drag a video clip to the right, creating a blank space to its left,
you'll get a black moment of video. This can be especially useful at the
beginning of a movie or between transitions to show the passage of time.
TRANSITIONS
Transitions can be used to smooth the change between two different film
clips. They can be used to create moods or special effects.

Click on the transitions button on the Transitions menu to see the transitions
offered in iMovie. You can use the preview button to get a rough idea
of what the transition will look like. Select the two clips you want to
place the transition between (shift and click on each clip), then select
the Transition. Using the Preview button makes the preview appear in the
iMovie Monitor. If you click on the transition name, it will give a small
preview in the Transitions screen.
Different transitions have different options available, such as the direction
the transition moves, so experiment! You can also change the speed of
the preview, using the Speed Slider in the window.
