How To Download Digital Video Footage

iMovie is a "non-linear" video editing software. The non-linear part refers to the fact that once the footage is transferred to the computer, there is no tape involved in the editing process. Until recently, only high-end, expensive video editing programs offered ths feature. That's the good part. The bad part is that your computer and your camera must have special features before you can use them with iMovie.

First, your video camera must be a DIGITAL video camera before you can use it with iMovie. That doesn't mean that if you have footage taken with another video camera that you can't use it in iMovie, it just means that you need another piece of equipment to convert to digital format. Both your video camera and your iMac have to come with FireWire connections. (If your computer came with iMovie installed, you have a FireWire connection.)

To connect your DV camera to your computer:

  1. Turn off your camera.
  2. Plug in the FireWire cable into the port of your computer.
  3. Plug in the FireWire cable into the port of your camera.
  4. Turn on your camera, and switch to the desired mode. (Usually Playback or Record)
