We are located in Knoxville, Tennessee and allow both students and non-students to join. Are you unsure? Just stop by for a few practices and see if you like it. If you do then stay, if not, no money lost. We meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6:30. We do however take a break for the holidays. The date of our next meeting is still being determined. You can either check back here, or e-mail us at fencing@utk.edu. If you have any other questions, you might find the answer on our Frequently Asked Questions page, or feel free to email us.

About Fencing at UT

Fencing is made up of three different weapons: foil, saber, and epee.

Foil
If you are new to fencing we first teach you foil. Foil is considered the practice blade. It is also the blade most of our fencers prefer. The foil is a tip weapon, meaning to score a point, you must stab your opponent with the tip. The foil itself is a very flexible blade that doesn't require a lot of movement to use correctly. Thus it seems the perfect training blade. In fact that's what it was originally created for. It was made as a safe way to learn the Epee.

Epee
The Epee is considered the blade closest related to dueling. Like the foil, the Epee is a tip weapon. However the Epee is a lot heavier and less flexible than the foil. This makes it slightly more dangerous than the foil. That is why we make you train for 6 months in foil before allowing you to learn Epee.

Saber
Have you ever wanted to be a pirate - boarding a ship and slashing away? How about being part of the calvary and fighting on horseback? Well they both use blades similar to the saber. The saber is a slashing weapon. You can use any part of the weapon to score a hit. It is also the quickest blade. Lightning fast slashes and cuts are the essence of saber.

Directions

We are located in Knoxville Tennessee at University of Tennessee campus. To get here take I-40 to exit 387. Then turn onto 17th street heading toward campus (This is a right turn if from I-40 East. If from the West, it circles and is a right turn as well). This will take you up past Hess Hall until you hit a stop sign with the option only to turn right. This is Andy Holt Ave. You'll see The Bubble in between the HYPR and the Aquatic Center. (The bubble is a large white building that is dome shaped) Alternately, you can also get to Andy holt by turning onto Volunteer Blvd. from Kingston Pike and then turning left onto Andy holt roughly a mile down (first light).
