Frequently Used Tools:

Additional Endorsement Programs

Additional endorsement programs are available to teachers who want to add areas of licensure to their Tennessee licenses. Our additional endorsement programs are State approved (TN Department of Education) and nationally accredited through NCATE (National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education). For a list of additional endorsements programs offered through the College of Education, Health & Human Sciences, click here. The college also works collaboratively with departments for additional endorsements in Library Media Specialist, Music Education, School Social Worker, and Vocational Agriculture. Please visit the individual department website for the collaborative programs.

Admission to the additional endorsement program is a two-step process. First, the teacher must submit an Application for Curriculum Review with appropriate documentation, to the Office of Teacher Licensure. You may request this application at this link or by calling (865) 974-8194. In addition, you will also need to complete and return a signed copy of the Professional Dispositions Expected of All Teacher Candidates. The mailing address is provided on the application. Once the request for a curriculum review and the Professional Dispositions Expected of All Teacher Candidates have been received, a licensure specialist will review the application materials and a “program of study” will be mailed to the applicant. The “program of study” will outline the following requirements, if applicable:

  • specific courses required,
  • length of practicum, and
  • Praxis examinations.

The second step in the admission process, is for the applicant to apply to either Undergraduate Admissions or Graduate & International Admissions. The Undergraduate Admission application is available here. The Graduate & International Admission application is available here. All candidates must meet the 2.50 minimum GPA standard for admission to the additional endorsement program. If graduate credit is desired/required for the professional education course work, the candidate must be admitted through Graduate & International Admissions, which requires a minimum GPA of 2.70.

Once the applicant has completed all requirements for the additional endorsement, he/she is eligible to request the endorsement be added to his/her Tennessee license. The recommendation to the State’s Office of Teacher Licensing must be submitted by the university. The applicant will submit the following documents to the Office of Teacher Licensing, A332 Bailey Education Complex, attention Ms. Glenda Noe:

  • completed license application, available on the State’s website,
  • a copy of the Praxis score report, if UTK was not requested as a score recipient, and
  • an official transcript, if any required courses were completed elsewhere.

The Office of Teacher Licensing will submit all required documents to the State to request the additional endorsement be added to the license. Our office will also submit an official UT transcript with the licensure recommendation. We are only able to provide this service if all fees/fines are paid prior to our office receiving the transcript.

Please note: TN Department of Education's new policy for adding secondary endorsements by tests only.

Secondary Academic Endorsement by Tests Only (Does not include any Occupational Education endorsements)

Effective April 1, 2010, applicants who hold a current, valid Tennessee Teacher license with one or more secondary academic endorsement area(s) (i.e. the endorsement contains one or more of the secondary grades 7-12) can add another secondary endorsement by passing the required Praxis specialty area test(s). Applicants seeking additional endorsement(s) by test only must pass all applicable portions of the Praxis Series Exams developed and administered by Educational Testing Service. (Click to look at a complete lisiting of specific Praxis Series Exams required in Tennessee.)  NOTE: Applicants seeking to add a secondary endorsement by passing required Praxis specialty area tests do not need to obtain the recommendation from a college/university.
