Petition Guidelines

What is a Petition?

Petitions are course substitutions or waivers used to fulfill curricular, major, and/or graduation requirements. Petitions do not change information on your academic history/transcript.

*** Please note that petitions for students that are in pre-major categories will be reviewed after that student has been officially accepted into the major.

Please complete ALL requested information on the Petition form.

Incomplete petitions cannot be processed.

Submit petitions for general education course requirements to Education, Health and Human Sciences Student Services Center, 332A Claxton Complex.

Submit petitions for major and minor requirements directly to your faculty advisor.

If you are not an EHHS student but you do have a minor in this college, please submit your petition for minor requirements to the Education, Health and Human Sciences Student Services Center, 332A Claxton Complex.

What should my request include?:

      • The name of the course(s) as it appears on the academic history/transcript
      • Credit hours
      • Grade(s) received (NOTE: D's and F's do not transfer)
      • Where the course(s) was taken or when, if taken at UT
      • How the course(s) is to be used
      • Reason for your request
      • You must attach a course description (syllabus or catalog description) on all LD or UD (transfer credit) courses and an academic history to your petition
      • Catalog Year - Most often, this is determined by the year under which you entered the University of Tennessee.
      • Your major

       

      Examples of Petitions:

      • Please allow Biology LD, Principles of Biology I, 4 credit hours, grade C, and Biology LD, Principles of Biology II, 4 credit hours, grade B+, taken at University of Memphis to satisfy my natural science sequence.
      • Please allow Math 119, College Algebra, 3 credit hours, grade A-, taken Spring 2002 at UT to substitute for Math 110 in the Child Development major.
      • Please allow English LD, Themes in American Literature, 3 credit hours, grade B, taken at Maryville College to count as a humanities elective.
