Welcome to our organization
The Asian American Association is made up of undergraduate and graduates students of the University of Tennessee.
The Asian American Association (AAA)at UTK promotes awareness of Asian American issues, serves as a representative voice of the Asian American community, celebrates the diversity and commonalities of Asian Americans, and provides a social support network to our members. Although the AAA deals primarily with Asian American issues, our membership is not by any means restricted to those of Asian decent.
The Asian American Association welcomes all members of the UT community regardless of race, religion, or national origin to join us in raising cultural awareness and fostering unity and understanding among Asians, Asian Americans, and all other peoples of the UT community.
Fall 2010
Boomsday: 9/5/10
-The annual fireworks show that takes place on the river in Knoxville. We went as a group and had a great time.
Phone-a-thon: 9/15/10
- An annual charity event, where people from all over the Knoxville area come to the East Tennessee Children’s Hospital and volunteer. As an organization, AAA went to the hospital for a few hours, calling various people and asking them to donate to the hospital. This year, the hospital was raising money to buy an MRI machine. Overall, we raised $2682 in pledges!
Bubble Tea Fundraiser: #1: 8/31/10-9/1/10; #2: 9/31/10 and 10/1/10
-We bought all the materials needed to make the bubble tea and sold them. There were two flavors to choose from: Thai and green tea. It was a huge success!
9th Annual Hip Hop Summit: 10/15/10
-One of our biggest events of the semester besides formal! This annual event was the first time it took place in Knoxville. It began in California, first taking place in Koreatown showcasing the talents of many individuals of Asian descent. This year we had dancers, singers, and other performances such as Lyricks, Sky High Lab, Free Moral Agents, and Jackie Chain.
Boo at the Zoo: 10/22/10
-Went to the Knoxville Zoo and volunteered our time. We did various things: dressing up in costumes, passing out candy, taking pictures, etc. It was a lot of fun and seeing the little kids in costume was awesome!
Trunk or Treat: 10/30/10
-Took place at Circle Park and cars lined up to pass out candy in the back of their trunks.
Formal: 11/30/10
-Our second formal dance that had plenty of music, dancing, and sweating! Prizes were given out and just a few hours for everyone to get together and have a good time.
Potluck: 11/30/10
-Last event of the semester that took place on the last day of classes. We came together and just hung out. There was a lot of Asian food, Taboo, Scrabble, Apples to Apples, and other games!
Spring 2010
Asian Cultural Awareness Night
- Each year, our organization prepares for its biggest event in the Spring called our Awareness Night. It is a show dedicated to presenting the various cultures within our group. The theme is called "ORIGIN." We will present traditional dances, singing, skits and authentic Asian food.
Project Being There
- PBT is a non-profit organization founded in Knoxville that aids orphanages in Vietnam. AAA is proud to partner with their noble mission to raise funds that provides these children with basic necessities including clothing, baby formula, antibiotics, and other types of medicine. Vietnamese Tutoring
- For the year semester, Linda and Yma Dieu tutor a West Knoxville family basic and conversational Vietnamese. This couple, along with their 3 children who were adopted from Vietnam, will be visiting Vietnam next year.

Fall 2009
2009 Potluck
- After a great semester, we wanted to celerbate with our semesterly potluck. This year was bigger and better than ever with everyone bringing a dish or their choice and lots of games.
First Annual AAA Formal
- (November 2009) This year, AAA sponsored its first ever formal dance. With the help of UT's Korean Student Association (KSA), our fall formal had over 80 guests celebrating a truly great semester.
SGA Diversity Affairs International Week: Asian Game Night
- (November 2009) As part of SGA's International Week series, AAA sponsored a game night where we taught and played games such as Majong, Thien Len, Big 2 and other card games.
"From Saigon to CNN" with Betty Nguyen
- (October 2009) We once again worked with ETCH to help raise money for their prenatal intensive care unit. We called back past donators for pledge renewal. This year, we raised over $1400 in pledges!
Boo at the Zoo!
- (October 2009) We volunteered at the Knoxville Zoo dressing up as characters and passing out candy, providing a safe enviornment for families and small children to trick or treat!
Spaghetti Fundraiser
- (October 2009) We worked a buffet-style spaghetti fundraiser to raise money for our formal. It was a pretty great success.

- (August 2009) Working with Project Being There, AAA manned a carwash to raise money for charity at a local McDonald's in West Knoxville!

- We volunteered at Project Being There's booth selling raffle tickets, novelty items, and drinks at the event.
Project Being There Rummage Sale

-We collected and donated several items to help raise funds for Project Being There. We also volunteered at the sale assisting customers and making sales.

Boys and Girls Club Cultural Week Event
Friday, March 27, 2009 | 2:00-4:00pm @ Boys and Girls Club
Together with We sponsored an Asian cultural day for the Boys and Girls Club in Downtown Knoxville. We had a chopstick tutorial, an origami activity, colored national flags of major Asian countries, and shared some tasty Asian snacks with the kids.
AAA Awareness Night
Saturday, March 7, 2009 @ Clarence Brown Theater
Our biggest event this semester is our Awareness night. This year, we performed our original play "Rushed." The night also included performances by two traditional Asian dance groups, original songs, and authentic Asian cusine.
Telethon for East Tennessee Children's Hospital
(January 2009) This semester, we participated as operators in the East Tennessee Chlidren's Hospital live Miracle Network Telethon. This event raised over $1.4 million dollars which will be used for new equipment, supplies, and a new ambulence for the hospital.

SuChin Pak:
(September 2008) "Teen Politics: Navigating the Current Landscape and Youth Issues" MTV correspondent SuChin Pak discussed how MTV tackles the issue of politics and their target audience. She put a personal face on how to engage young people in discussions about political and civic engagement, told through her experience as a News Correspondent. Pak's lecture was planned by the Asian American Association in conjunction with the UT Issues Committee, Women’s Coordinating Council, United Residence Halls Council and the Ready for the World Initiative.
Telethon for East Tennessee Children's Hospital
- (September 2008) Calling back past donators for pledge renewal. We raised over $2600 in pledges!
Lisa Ling
- (October 2008) Special correspondent Lisa Ling, host of National Geographic's "Explorer" and a featured reporter for CNN and the Oprah Winfrey Show visited the UT campus to discuss global issues, specifically "China's Lost Girls" and shared her experiences in Afghanistan, North Korea, and China.
