Graphic Design
There are two Fridays identified as advising days for the graphic design area. During these times, faculty will be available to advise students identified as graphic design majors. You must come with the proper paperwork completed in order to be advised and will not be advised until it is all completed. On each of these days there will be designated times in which the program will be explained in detail by a faculty member. Plan on coming to one of these times should you need more specific detail on the graphic design curriculum. Otherwise faculty are available to review student paperwork throughout the time period. Students will be assisted on a first-come first-serve basis.
Graphic Design Podcasts - There are now podcasts online to help explain the advising process. If you are using a PC you will need to download iTunes to access.
1. DARS Report
https://darsweb.utk.edu/
This document will clearly state the classes you have remaining and those you have taken for application towards a graphic design degree. You must be registered as a graphic design major in order for this to print out correctly.
2. Academic Work sheet (download worksheet)
Fill out the sheet with the schedule of classes you are aiming to take to work towards completing the degree requirements. Begin with next academic semester, not with the current or previous semesters. Do not get hung up on what exact class is being offered (i.e. you can put Printmaking Studio class indicating you would like to complete a studio course, but do not have to put which exact Printmaking class you are going to take). You must bring this form filled out for the next 3 semesters, in order to complete your adivising session. Those who do not have this paperwork will be required to come to the subsequent advising session with the paperwork completed in order to complete the advising process.
This form will set up an intended plan for the upcoming 3 semesters of classes. It will be xeroxed and a copy will be placed in your permanent file in the Art Office to indicate that you understand what you should be doing in the coming semesters. It is not a verbatim schedule as often classes close before you can get it. It is meant to provide a framework from which you can register for classes in the future. Once this form is completed by yourself, reviewed and signed off on by a design faculty member, then you can receive a card that will release your PIN for registering for classes in the coming weeks.
If you are not sure what classes you need to take, please review your curriculum (see below) and make changes appropriately.
3. Curriculum for your catalog year
http://diglib.lib.utk.edu/dlc/catalog/index.html
In the past 5 years, there have been several changes made to the graphic design curriculum. You will be held to the curriculum as it was listed in the undergraduate catalog the year you entered the University. In order to best advise you, you should bring in a copy of the curriculum from the catalog for the year you started your classes at UT. These can be dowloaded and printed from this site -- you only need the GD page from the College of Arts + Sciences section.
