Assistant Professors Ted Shelton and Tricia Stuth Honored by AIA
Assistant Professors Ted Shelton and Tricia Stuth have received the AIA State of Tennessee Award of Excellence for their Ghost Houses project, a market rate rental duplex in Knoxville.
"We are thrilled to receive the AIA State of Tennessee Award of Excellence as only three firms received this award," said Stuth, adding that six other projects were recognized with awards of merit.
Awards were announced at the AIA State Convention held in Knoxville in July.
The Ghost House project is a re-design of a three-house group originally constructed in 1910. At the turn of the 20th Century, Knoxville was denser than Chicago. The project by Shelton and Stuth presents a model of compact urban living that "hearkens back to the city's past and hopefully foreshadows its future," they said.
When it was constructed in 1910, the existing house was the center of a three-house group of similar design and detailing. The memory of the two lost houses, demolished in the 1990's, lives in city files, newspaper clippings, the minds of nearby residents, and now the Ghost House.
Permissions for the project required five public meetings, issuance of certificate of historic appropriateness, a rezoning, review and approval of a development plan, and variances for numerous requirements including off-street parking and setbacks.
Congratulations to Assistant Professors Shelton and Stuth!
