UT School of Architecture Announces New Post-professional M. Arch Degree
The School or Architecture now offers a 36-credit 'post-professional' Master of Architecture Degree for those already holding a B. Arch. or M. Arch professional degree. The program is targeted to students who want to deepen their design skills or pursue focused research in a particular are of study. Within the highly flexible program, two optional concentrations are offered, sustainable design and urban design, in addition to a self-designed concentration. Read more.

Message from the Dean: College Hires New Development Director
The College of Architecture and Design has hired a new development director, Tierney Bates. Tierney is an alumnus of this university and formerly worked in development for the College of Engineering. He understands how important it is for alumni to be engaged with their alma mater and with the unit from which they graduated. The college has two years left to raise $6 million, and Tierney has hit the ground running to complete that goal. Read More.
Interior Design Student Designs Hanging Light Fixture for UT Medical Center
The UT Medical Center is building a new Heart Hospital in 2010 which will serve as a new entrance to the medical center's campus. Interior design student Theresa Kidwell from UT Knoxville will help light that entrance. Kidwell was selected from a group of her peers to design a hanging 3-dimensional interior lighting element for the four-story atrium of the new building. The new entrance area, fondly referred to by the building architects as an elliptunda -- or an ellipse-shaped rotunda -- was designed with a central lighting element in mind to hang from the ceiling. Alumnus Mike Fitts Honored with UT Alumni Service Award
College of Architecture and Design alumnus Mike Fitts was honored last month with the University of Tennessee Alumni Service Award. The award recognizes exceptional service or longterm continuing service and leadership to the University of Tennessee. Mike currently serves as the State Architect for Tennessee, but he also holds law and engineering degrees. In his role for the state, he has had a significant, positive impact on the quality of public facilities and the design review process. The college is honored to have such a distinguished alumnus. UT Architecture and Design Students Receive More than $160,000 in Scholarships and Awards at Honors Convocation
The College of Architecture and Design recently celebrated the achievements of its students and the generosity of its alumni and donors at its annual honors convocation. The event is a chance for the college to honor students for their accomplishments and thank sponsors for their donations and support. More than 70 students from incoming freshman to graduate students received over $160,000 in monetary awards and scholarships.Read more.
Former Interior Design Program Coordinator Josette Rabun Retires
Dr. Josette Rabun, former interior design program coordinator, retired on July 31, 2009. Professor Rabun joined the Interior Design faculty in 1982 and became program coordinator in 1992, leading the program to national recognition. She is a Fellow in the Interior Design Education Council (IDEC). She will be recognized with Professor Emeritus status through the Office of the Chancellor. Read More.
News from the Interior Design Program
The Interior Design Program has welcomed former associate professor Mary Beth Robinson back to the college. Robinson will begin the fall 2009 semester as a full-time professor. Another new addition to the faculty is Ryann Aoukar, an outstanding design professional from New York. AIAS Student Chapter Travels to Nation's Capital for Leadership Conference
The American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS) presented the 25th annual Grassroots Leadership Conference in Washington, D.C. in July. The conference offers instruction and tips on how to be an effective leader, run a successful AIAS chapter, and on motivating and organizing students. The College of Architecture and Design was able to send two representatives to the conference this year. Read More.
Assistant Professors Ted Shelton and Tricia Stuth Honored by AIA
Assistant Professors Ted Shelton and Tricia Stuth have received the AIA State of Tennessee Award of Excellence for their Ghost Houses project, a market rate rental duplex in Knoxville. Awards were announced at the AIA State Convention held in Knoxville in July. Read More.
Paul Bowman Steps Down as Development Director
Paul Bowman, development director for the College of Architecture and Design since November 2008, has accepted a position with UT's Institute for Public Service. In his ten months with the college, Bowman was able to get the ball rolling on several development initiatives and travelled extensively visiting with alumni. The college wishes him the best of luck in his new position. Read More.
UT Knoxville CSI Chapter Wins Design Competition at National Convention
Students from the College of Architecture and Design, traveled to the Construction Specification Institute (CSI) annual convention in Indianapolis in mid-June. As part of the convention, students participated in the Construct2009, a special design competition in which they placed first. Read More.
Professor Gregor Kalas Receives NEH Grant to Conduct Research at UCLA
Thanks to an NEH (National Endowment for the Humanities) fellowship, Professor Gregor Kalas is currently conducting research at the Experiential Technologies Center at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Read More.
Scott Wall Named Director of
School of Architecture
The College of Architecture and Design at UT Knoxville has named Scott Wall, former adjunct associate professor, the new director of the School of Architecture. Wall, who is an alumnus of UT Knoxville, has taught in the college for 6 years. He officially begins as director on August 1, 2009. Read More.
Team of Architecture and Planning Students Claim Top Honors in EPA Sustainable Design Competition in D.C.
A team from the UT Knoxville, comprised largely of architecture students, won top honors at the P3 Award Competition during the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) National Sustainable Design Expo held in Washington, D.C., April 18 - 20. As its prize, the winning team has been awarded a grant of $75,000 from the EPA. Read More.
Student Work from Graduate Studio Trip to Beijing to be Part of Exhibition
Fifteen students from the University of Tennessee the College of Architecture and Design, including one student from the College of Journalism & Electronic Media, traveled this past spring to Beijing for a long workshop and site visit. Led by Professor Edgar Stach, the students and faculty worked in coordination with students and faculty from Tsinghua and Beijing universities on two urban development projects addressing high-density housing problems. Work from the Beijing studio will be part of the Divergent Convergences Exhibition in Beijing in August. Read More.
Local Architecture Firm's Gift Helps Students Seeking Green Building Accreditation
A Knoxville firm has funded an award to help students in the College of Architecture and Design at UT Knoxville earn "green" building and sustainability credentials and prepare for costly environmental design exams. The Brewer Ingram Fuller Sustainable Design Award was established thanks to an endowed gift from Brewer Ingram Fuller Architects in Knoxville. Read More.

The College of Architecture and Design has recently established the Design Legacy Society, a program to honor and thank alumni and friends of the College of Architecture and Design who have arranged a bequest or planned gift to the college.

Congratulations College of Architecture and Design Class of 2009
The College of Architecture and Design commencement was held at 5 p.m. Thursday, May 7, 2009 in the Alumni Memorial Building on the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, campus. More than 80 undergraduate and graduate students graduated from the college.
Sarah Gardial, vice provost for faculty affairs, spoke to the graduates giving them sound advice for the future and issuing the charge.

College Partners with Online Education Provider to Create Web-based Sustainable Design Certificate Program
The College of Architecture and Design has formed a partnership with RedVector, Inc., an online education provider, to offer an online Certificate in Sustainable Design and Green Buildings for continuing education and professional development of licensed professionals. The certificate program is designed to broaden participants' sustainable design and green building knowledge and qualifies for continuing education credit for design professionals. Many courses cover exam point categories and knowledge required for the LEED Accredited Professional exam given by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). Read More.
Dean John McRae to be Recognized at ARCC National Conference This Week
John McRae, FAIA, Dean of the College of Architecture and Design and former Director of Research for the American Institute of Architects, was selected by the Architectural Research Centers Consortium (ARCC) as the recipient of the 2008 James Hacker Award this past November and was formally recognized at the ARCC Spring Research Conference in San Antonio April 15-18, 2009. Design Matters Camp for High School Students, Not Your Typical Summer Camp
Design Matters, the college's annual summer design camp for high school students, takes place this year June 21 through 27. Limited to only 40 participants, the May 1 registration deadline is fast-approaching. Not your typical summer camp, Design Matters gives high school students the chance to experience life as a college design student for a week. Hnedak Bobo Group Sponsors Design Competition in the College of Architecture and Design
Hnedak Bobo Group (HBG) recently established the Hnedak Bobo Group Global Design Award in the College of Architecture and Design. The scholarship program is design-oriented, rather than need-based, and will be awarded to a rising 5th year architecture students or team of students for exceptional work completed during a study abroad program.
