The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, the State's land-grant and flagship research institution, defines academic outreach and engagement as integrated scholarship which engages its academic missions of research, creativity, teaching and service with its community. This engagement is a reciprocal relationship which informs and shapes the academic mission and extends the University's intellectual resources to serve its constituents.
Mission Statement
The Academic Outreach and Engagement Council promotes the university's land grant mission by encouraging excellence in outreach scholarship through teaching, research, and service to our constituents, by encouraging excellence in engagement that is transformative for the academic and public communities, and by advocating policies that reward and recognize faculty engaged in academic outreach and engagement.
Goals and Objectives
To develop, implement and continuously improve policies for academic outreach and engagement on the UT Knoxville campus.
- To lead the academic community in developing standards and definitions of outreach scholarship, service learning and engagement that embrace best practices.
- To develop, implement and continuously improve academic outreach and engagement at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.
To serve as the primary advocate for UT Knoxville campus academic outreach and engagement activities.
- To disseminate information regarding academic outreach and engagement activities through close coordination with other university offices and academic units (e.g., UT Knoxville library, UT Office on Communication and Marketing)
- To promote rewards and appropriate recognition of faculty who demonstrate excellence in academic outreach and engagement scholarship.
