We thank you for your support of the History DepartmentThe University of Tennessee Department of Anthropology annually awards various grants to support graduate student research, and travel to professional conferences. The department also recognizes superior and deserving undergraduate students. A series of endowment funds are also used to support faculty research and travel.

The Department of Anthropology is grateful for the continued generosity of its many supporters. This generosity plays a large part in the department’s ability to provide financial support for our students and faculty. Interested parties may contribute to the department’s general Anthropology Development Fund or to more specialized funds.

Unrestricted Funds

The Anthropology Development Fund is for unrestricted gifts. This fund is used where the need is greatest. In the past, it has been used to support faculty research and graduate education. This fund enables the Department to plan for long-term goals and to respond expeditiously to issues of immediate concern.

Please indicate that the check is for the Anthropology Development Fund or for unrestricted use by the Department and mail it to the address below.

Restricted Funds

The department also has specific funds which support particular aspects of its programs, such as faculty/student research and travel, graduate study in specific fields of anthropology, and undergraduate education. Restricted gifts may be made to the funds below.

The William M. Bass Forensic Anthropology Endowment funds student research, professional travel and small equipment purchases in forensic anthropology. The fund honors the seminal contributions of Professor Emeritus Bass, Professor and Head of Anthropology at the University of Tennessee from 1971-1992.

The Jimmy and Dee Haslam Forensic Anthropology Endowment will provide annual support for the Haslam Forensic Anthropology Postdoctoral Fellowship program. The Haslam Postdoctoral Fellows will be collaborating with our faculty on ground-breaking forensic anthropology research at our unique Anthropological Research Facility (ARF), in our world-class human osteology collections and in our newly-established Forensic DNA Laboratory. We honor and recognize the generosity of the Haslams in establishing this endowment.

The William M. Bass Forensic Anthropology Building Fund will provide the necessary monies to construct a state-of-the-art research, processing and training facility at the newly expanded ARF. The generosity of Dr. Bass in initiating this fund encouraged Jimmy and Dee Haslam to provide their own gift to this building project as well.

The Charles H. Faulkner Graduate Student Travel Award Fund provides four travel awards annually for graduate students presenting their research at national or international anthropology meetings. This fund was named in honor of Professor Emeritus Faulkner whose care and passion for graduate student education and training is recognized by these awards.

The Kneberg-Lewis Fund provides two scholarships per year that defray research and writing expenses for advanced doctoral students. The fund was established by the founders of the Department, Madeline Kneberg and T.M.N. Lewis.

The Patricia Black Scholarship Fund is available to support outstanding archaeology students’ research projects. Funds are disbursed on a case-by-case basis decided by the archaeology faculty. This fund is named in honor of its benefactor, the late Patricia Black.

The Jonathan C. Spear Memorial Fund provides an annual scholarship to an outstanding anthropology major studying North American archaeology. This fund was established by the family of the late Jon Spear, an enthusiastic anthropology major who was in our department in mid-1990s.

The Sandy Jeffers Memorial Fund provides an annual scholarship to an outstanding anthropology major studying historical archaeology or forensic anthropology. This fund was established by the department to honor the late Sandy Jeffers, a dedicated anthropology major who graduated in 2003.
