Tajín Totonac and Los Voladores (Flying Men) de Papantla
Dr. Raymond Hall presented several exhibits showing the influence of Africa on the culture of Veracruz, Mexico. The first is an art exhibit of the Tajín Totonac and Los Voladores (Flying Men) de Papantla, depicting the ritual dances performed by the indigenous people of Northern Veracruz. It was on display in the Art Gallery of the Black Cultural Center during the Spring semester of 2005.
The traditional dances were performed by the Totanac Indians who lived with Africans during Mexico’s early Colonial period. The dance, called “La Danza de Los Negritos” (the dance of the little black men), is the central highlight of the current exhibit.
Dr. Hall has been visiting the northeastern coast of Veracruz for the past eight years where he has been an invited member of the Voladores. As a member he has performed “La Danza de los Negritos,” “La Danza de Los Voladores,” and several other ritual based dances.
