"Right To Know"
Students by law have a "Right To Know" the hazards of every experiment that they are required to carry out in their required laboratories.  A description of the known hazards of any chemicals being used or synthesized will be included in your prelab presentation.  It is essential for any student who is pregnant, who may become pregnant, or who suffers from specific allergies related to chemical exposure, to inquire of your Instructor, TA or lecturer about any known hazards of a planned experiment before you, the student, undertakes that experiment.
This is your "Right To Know"

  Important New Notices:

You will need to purchase a TurningPoint classroom "ResponseCard"
also called a "Clicker" for
Dr. Adcock's Fall 2009 Chem 100 class from the University Book and Supply Store, The pad ID number must be registered on your BlackBoard account.  Although this system has a $40 upfront cost, you are not required to register/pay online after the initial purchase and can use it in all your TP classes throughout your college career, even handing it down once you have graduated.

Once you have registered your "ResponseCard" through your BlackBoard account you may access your lecture participation (CP) grades on BlackBoard.  Please keep in mind that each question in class has a point value, and the CP grade is equal to the number of questions answered correctly divided by the total questions asked during the term.  The CP grades each term equal 6% and that an extra 3% is added (extra credit) for participating in class (i.e. attendance).  Don't miss out on Class Participation points by coming to class late, failing to register or forgetting to bring your clicker.  Try to be there on time and get these points by joining the class on time.  Attendance is determined only by registering clicker responses in class.  JLA

Note cards, graphing/programmable calculators, cell-phones, PDAs and laptop computers are prohibited on Quizzes/Examinations!  Only a simple scientific calculator, that will do logarithms, may be used!
Students who do not bring a simple scientific calculator to the quiz/exam will be required to work without a calculator, no graphing calculator may be used! JLA

Notice: It has recently come to my attention that some unauthorized person has posted announcements that  ongoing classes will meet at alternative locations, sometimes across campus.  These notices are BOGUS.  If you should see such a notice for this class, and I have not previously announced the change in class or on this website,
PLEASE IGNORE ANY SUCH MESSAGE.
JLA.

Notice!  I sometimes receive email messages from students which are virus contaminated.  The server scans these email and if a virus is found sends me a notice. I do not see your email message!  If I do not respond within a couple of days to an email please telephone me if it is still important.  My phone number is 974-3391.  You would do well to install the university's free McAfee Antivirus software on you computer.   JLA

General Policy Notices:

Abbreviated Lectures:  .pdf format abbreviated lecture materials are available for Chem 100, 110.  You will need the Adobe Reader to access and print them.  Be sure to read the Notice!  Certain solutions and copyrighted materials are presented only in the lectureThe abbreviated lecture notes are reduced to 3 slides per page.  This saves paper and flipping pages.  I have also made it possible to pull up the lecture slides full size with a second link "( full size)" in front of the Chapter number. Use this if you have viewing difficulties or to print a particular slide you wish full size.  JLA

Policy on Cellphones & Calculators:  Due to continuing advances in technology, communication and connectivity, it has become necessary to institute a departmental calculator/cellphone policy.

All cellphones must be switched off during any class or examination.   Only a simple "scientific calculator" having the ability to store intermediate products, calculate logarithms and exponents, summation, trigonometric and arithmetic capabilities will be allowed for quizzes and examinations.

Any calculator with the ability to store textual information, download programming, communicate
with another computer or having graphing, extensive storage, programing or communications abilities is strictly prohibited during any examination.
Use of such a calculator or a cellphone during the examination will result in your paper being taken up and a zero grade assigned!

Policy on Note Card Use:
Students in Dr. Adcock's General Chemistry classes may not use notecards or outside written materials of any kind on quizzes or examinations.  In chemistry 100 & 110 necessary organic and biological structures and mathematical formulas will be supplied!

Studying for the Final:  Start studying for the final exam after your first quiz!  When you study new material go back and review old quizzes and exams to keep the material fresh and to extablish memory links and relationships between concepts.  You will find things a lot easier if you don't cram all your studying into the final few days.

Final Exam Coverage:  Do you need a "distillation" of what is important to know in any given chapter?
1)  Go to the   Chemistry 100 - Complete Course Coverage by Chapter - pdf format
2)  Go to the   Chemistry 110 - Complete Course Coverage by Chapter - pdf format
The above links list
important topics in each chapter covered.  This is your final exam coverage as well!

Need Help?  Your TAs and I are available to help, alternatively (except summer) the Tutorial Center, BU 513, has TAs available to assist you.  Please, make use of these resources!  If you need a private or group tutor see Ms. Bartmess in BU 514, these tutors are not free!  If you are unable to afford a personal tutor check the programs at the Black Cultural Center.  Most are open to all University Students.

Puzzled about a question on a Quiz or Exam?  Don't know what a word means?  Words like "hydrolysis", ask your TA  He/She is allowed to give a synonym or a brief definition of a term which is not specifically the question asked.

Laboratory Policy Notices:
Questions about the laboratory: During Fall and Spring terms, contact Dr. Hazari.

Lab Final:   The Lab Final will be about 30-45 minutes long and will count 30% of your lab grade.  This is about twice the value of a weekly quiz.  Don't blow it off!

Laboratory Attire - Students must wear protective clothing (long pants, jeans and shoes which cover the toes) to Laboratory or you will be sent away with an unexcused absence.  Students should wear natural fabrics and inexpensive clothing.  Protect yourself!

Laboratory Manuals: C. B. Mamantov, A. Hazari:

CH 100: PRINCIPLES OF CHEMISTRY (Dated for Term Used)  --or --

CH 110: INTRODUCTION  TO ORGANIC AND BIOCHEMISTRY (Dated for Term Used).

These in house publications by C. B. Mamantov, A. Hazari and are available at Graphic Creations, 1809 Lake Avenue, Knoxville TN 37916, ph (865) 522-6221, www.graphiccreations.com.

Academic Dishonesty:  It is considered academic dishonesty to bring copies of old laboratory reports to the laboratory.  If your TA observes you in possession of an old laboratory report in lab, you and your lab partner will receive a ZERO for that days work.
